Alright guys my mother and I are having out surgeries down in good ole Mexico. We were thinking of making it a mini vacation with my father as well. We will be driving from Oklahoma. Do you think riding in a car back home will be okay with lots of stops and take about three days with rest? I just don't know what kind of pain is going to be in our future. I called the airlines. 500 bucks per seat. Plus they want us to get an extra per person. This was at southwest. Just confused as to what is my best option.

Since your father would be driving, you might do okay. You'd need to take rest stops so you could get out and walk. I'd hate to be cooped up in a car if I had a lot of gas pain. Also, how long do you stay in MX? If you had 2-3 nights under your belt there, it would be a big help.

What do the rest of you say?????

I'd really be concerned about blood clot factor. Sitting for long periods of time would be a killer for your legs. You would need to get out and walk every hour as a preventative measure. If I were you, It would stress me out too much. ;)

I live about 200 miles away from my hospital. I was in the hospital for 2 days and then drove home on the 3rd day. As for the pain, I was good. We made sure to stop every 50 miles or so to get out and walk around. I would just be sure to stop often. I think you will be fine.....good luck to both of you! :)

You will need to walk as much as possible. You may have alot of gas pain (which is common) and you really need to get up and walk. I personally think you may be too uncomfortable. You don't know how your leeve will react to liquids either. Luckily I was never nauseated, but many people are. It would be awful to be out on a highway in the middle of nowhere and be sick.

I could have done it easily, but I don't know your tolorance. I didnt have post op pain. Just make sure to move your legs around and stop to stretch and walk every so often. If they pump you as full of blood thinners as they did me, you won't have much to worry about though. With mega doses of heparin and lovinox, I was more likely to bleed to death if we had a accident on the way home then to get a blood clot.

We drove home from Dallas to Albuquerque one week after surgery. I was supposed to leave 3 days earlier, but I decided I was not ready, so we waited. I was glad I did. I had a hernia repair that was giving me a LOT of pain, but you may be different. Everyone can tolerate different amounts of discomfort. I wanted a BED. No car. Bleh. I'm sure you'd be fine, but HEED the advice to stop and walk EVERY hour. This is a must if you're going to be in a car that long.

The stop and walk advice is what I got from my pulmonary doctor. Every hour I had to stop and at least walk a lap around the car. I was 2 months out from surgery and I did have a pre-op blood clot, but I am sure the advice to stop and walk is good.

Long distance travel immediately after surgery is not going to be enjoyable, so I don't think it's going to be a vacation for you. I think it's doable, but it will not be enjoyable. I would fly.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
