I miss coffee! My surgeon said I could drink Decaf tea, but can't have decaf coffee until 3 months post-op. He said there is a chemical/acid in coffee -- even decaf -- that could cause ulcerations in my new tummy. I have had a non-fat latte every day for 7 years! I love steaming the milk and the smell of the coffee pods as I put them in my Starbucks Barista machine! I have a countdown timer on my phone that will signal June 21, 2012 when I will try my first post-op non-fat (or 1%) decaf latte.

Here's a TMI story: I went for my 2-week post-op doctor appointment and asked the doc when I could have my latte again. He said 3 months. I told my husband with great enthusiasm, but he asked, "Great for your latte, but when can we have sex again?" I looked at him with a blank stare and he immediately said, "OK . . . got it! I now know your priorities!" He was joking and I knew the answer to his question -- but it has been a running joke with us ever since.

I am preop and crazy addicted to coffee! I cannot function without it. I am grumpy and moody right up til I drink that luscious sip of coffee! I hope I can tolerate it after surgery...

Switching to Decaf is sooo hard! I just don't feel awake! Weening myself off of caffeine before surgery next week.

I am also still pre-op but I started cutting my coffee intake by 1-2 ounces per week. It took me about eight weeks to get totally over it. Every once in a while I'll still go get a latte but it's just not what it used to be and I'll only drink a little bit. I did have lots of days where I felt like I was in a fog and couldn't think - it's amazing how addicted we get. I'm SO happy to have kicked the habit and don't have to worry about those debilitating withdrawal headaches.

I don't drink it in huge quantities, but I have coffee occasionally with no problems. Everyone is different.

I too tolerate coffee just fine. I spoke to my doctor last week who said the notion of coffee causing an ulcer in your new stomach is "BS", but did say its a diuretic and will need to watch Water intake if drinking coffee. Drink on if you can tolerate it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
