So I Had A Bezoar? Anybody Know About These

Recommended Posts

If you don't know I've been dealing with vomiting, dry heaving, sliming everyday. I had my endoscopy yesterday( not with my sugern) and he said its a bezoar and they are very rare. He couldn't tell me why or what causes it besides chewing on your hair which I don't and he hopes it doesn't come back. He told me the best way to keep them broke up is soda. Pre op I would of loved a reason to drink soda for my health but that not really an option now.

If any body knows a little more or has had one and got information about how to prevent it please let me know.

Wow, finally something "good" about soda!! I opened this because I remember a discussion on bezoars here before in relation to celery and coconut. The consensus seemed to be that either could cause a bezoar due to the fibrous nature of the foods. My surgeon says that's not possible, but I wonder if that's what caused yours?

Are they doing anything about it or just letting it dissolve on its own?

He took it out yesterday which i was so happy about. I dont eat celery or coconut so it has to be something else. He wasn't any help on telling me what it was. After sugery he asked my husband if I chew on my hair and my husband said no. I have a dog and I'm a hairstyliest but I'm pretty sure I don't consume that much hair to cause a bezoar. Im almost 3 months post op and havnt tried soda yet but if I try 1 a week or so maybe it will prevent this from happening again.

Wow... I thought that was a fictional thing from Harry Potter. Hoping you never have to experience that again!

Ew, there's something you don't want to look up on Google Images.

I'm assuming it's the acid in the soda that helps with this, not the bubbles? I'd be concerned about drinking carbonated beverages, but I guess flat soda is an option.

Wow! I just looked this up and came across this article:

Gastric Bezoar after Vertical Banded Gastroplasty: A Case Report and Review of the Literature Abdul S. Bangura, Stelin Johnson, Karen E. Gibbs Division of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery, Staten Island University Hospital, Staten Island, New York, USA E-mail: kgibbs@siuh.edu

I read it and it seems that it happens in our WLS communities. Good luck.

Wow, this is interesting. I think I will stick to stuff that's not stringy at least until I'm 1 year post op! Thanks for sharing and hope your feeling better. ;)

If you're a hairstylist, you could be inhaling fine, floating hairs when you are using clippers on men, or other really short hair. Just a thought. When I cut my boys' hair, I'm always coughing and sneezing from that. Since there is a connection in the back of your throat/sinuses, you could be swallowing some. (?)

So I think I figured out how I got a bezoar. Edamame beans!! I ate them all the time on my puréed phase and that about when my problems started. I had some last night and today I felt all clogged and couldn't keep any thing down so I went and got a coca cola and sipped on it and I think I broke it up I feel much better now. I guess the skin on the Beans don't digest very well!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
