12 days post op

Does this happen to you I eat mashed potato and when I swallow it I feel it go down gets like stuck then continues to my stomach. I'm thinking I had a hiatel hernia removed, is this the discomfort I feel from the hernia removal?? It's so annoying. :(

Yes! I had a hiatal hernia repair during my sleeve surgery & I threw up everything I ate when I started eating more solid mushies, such as grits, mashes potatoes, etc. It is apparently a pretty major surgery all on It's own & the typical hospital stay after that procedure alone is 5 days. I cried a ton during my 1st 5 wks post-op thinking I'd throw up & gag on everything for the rest of my life. And, after doing extensive research on a hiatalhernia repair I felt my surgeon had been remiss in not having explained this more in depth. He kind of just mentioned it in passing like it was no big deal, but it actually is kind of a big deal. It takes a while for the swelling on that area to go down so it really complicates the earlier stages of eating, as well as making drinking more challenging than it is for other vsg patients. Be patient & listen to your body.....you just might not be ready for dense mushies like mashed potatoes. I pretty much had to stick to yogurt, cottage cheese, cream of wheat w/ milk, instant oatmeal w/ milk, Soups & sf pudding & Jello. It will get better, but I do think it is a tougher recovery. Hang in there & feel free to pm me if you have questions or just need support!

P.S. When I listed the foods I had to stick to I meant to include that I was uncomfortable.eating anything other than those for about 4-5 weeks :) But don't despair! It gets so much better!

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
