IMO opinion, try to get in as many calories as you can as long as you obey the basic tenents of post-sleeve life: (As I understand them per my medical team)

  • Get 80 oz of Water minimum daily
  • Don't drink 1/2 an hour before or after a meal and don't drink while eating anything
  • Eat Proteins first, then veggies, then carbs
  • Try to avoid breads, rice and sugary foods
  • Exercise

Out of the gate, I could only get about 400 calories per day. After I was able to get on mushy, then solid foods in the first couple months, I was getting a max of 800 calories. I increased my activity level by running which required more calories, so I was able to get up to about 1,600 calories, but I was eating constantly, so it seemed, albeit, small, snacking type meals. I have an injured knee now, so I would guess I am around the 1,300 calories/day right now.

As far as what you put into MFP, just put in the foods and the quantity. It does the rest ... right?

You're right. It did seem time consuming to me, as well, but I think that is because I never really thought about the food (and quantity) I was shoving into my mouth and how it impacted me. The sleeve definately does that. You know about every bite. This was a new behavior for me, but just know that it did get easier for me and now it is more natural. Of course, I still have my weaknesses ... Cookies ... ice cream ... but I can enjoy them now without over-indulgence and guilt. Well, maybe a little guilt. :)

Yes it is time consuming at first, especially in the first few months. Not only are you learning what works for your sleeve, getting enough calories in to survive and avoid exhaustion and to support what ever your work out regime is.

Like PDXman said stick to the tenenants of the sleeve, especially early.

If you can learn the rules to YOUR sleeve it does get easier.

At 7 months out I dont spend alot of time worrying about how many calories I am consuming. I base my food consumption on my energy levels and how I am feeling. Tho I think I sit around 1200 calories a day, and work out twice a day.

I do occasionally have a un diet friendly snack, but I decided at the beginning of this I was not dieting, I was living a healthy life choice, and my sleeve fully supports this (especially seeing as those unhealthy foods are not well tolerated)..

Anyway..it does get easier, the first few months are hard and where you learn your sleeve lessons.

Every one is different. My NUT wants me to eat 1200 calories a day. I can't eat that much most of the time, so I do what I can. I agree with everyone else, follow the rules for your sleeve and please use myfitnesspal.com to log food intake. It is a real eye opener. ;) Oh, and do drink a lot of Water.

I am having trouble drinking so much Water !!! I too am having trouble finding foods and recipes, it is so much more of a "chore" to eat now than it used to be because I didn't care what I shoved into it ! I am three weeks post-op and I have no idea what my sleeve is telling me nor how much per sitting I am supposed to eat....this is a daily struggle ...hopefully it gets easier !!!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
