rdoactv 218 Posted April 16, 2012 I had called my insurance a few weeks ago. The lady in the phone seemed confused and unable to find my coverages and or exclusions then told me bariatric was excluded. I then decided to go for a consult anyway just to attempt insurance approval while I saved to go to Mexico. I had my consult with a surgeon today. Strangely, they checked my insurance and seem to be under the impression that it is covered and I have a good chance of approval(???) So, Im headed to the GI next. Guess we'll see what happens from here. Maybe, just maybe....trying not to get my hopes up too much though.
NJsharon 119 Posted April 16, 2012 Good luck, but I would make sure you are definitely covered before you do all the other appts. Otherwise they can be costly! I found out I was not covered, so I am heading to Mexico. They have some skilled Drs there & it is so much cheaper. I will keep my fingers crossed for you too though! I hope you are covered! rdoactv 218 Posted April 16, 2012 Thanks NJ, I've set my sights on Dr. Garcia if I do end up self pay. But if Ins. Will pay it will happen much sooner. Single parent, so the cash would take some time. It'll happen one way or another. It's become a tunnel vision goal for me.
Kat Crowder 34 Posted April 16, 2012 My insurance ought to pay, too. They're just being annoying. They want your doctor to document medical necessity by listing 2 comorbidities that have not responded to maximum medical treatment, and when my doctor did that, they still denied it, because apparently she didn't justify it the way they wanted. It's not like they provide a form or anything. Why couldn't I have gone through this exercise while I was doing the 6 month supervised diet, worked out the kinks, and gotten conditional approval pending the diet program? Frustrating. I'm so ready now, and I'm annoyed by this stupid back and forth of documents. Gah.
rdoactv 218 Posted April 17, 2012 Sorry Kat. I know its frustrating. The Ins companies goal is always to make money short term, regardless how it affects you long term. It is always assumed by them that you'll change companies and its not worth the long term investment for them. But keep trying. Kinda makes you feel Mexico is the option just to avoid the frustration and disappointment. Figured Id try to get the approval. Makes me feel like I'm doing something while I save my pennies. Good luck.
