How Soon Until You Can Drive, Mow The Lawn, Light Housework?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering how long do you have to wait until you can drive, mow the lawn, or do some things around the house. I know the first couple of days you have to rest try and get up about every 2 hours and walk around a bit. But how long until you can actually do stuff. I think I will go crazy just sitting and watching tv or in front of my computer. I am getting sleeved on Wednesday and was just curious. I have taken off 2 weeks from work to recover and then the 3rd week I will be working half days. HELP.

I was at the gym 5 days after surgery! Had surgery on Tues April 3 was out of hospital that Friday and by sunday was working out. I feel great! You have to listen to your body and you will know when it's time!

I waited a week until I drove and that was just local. I live in a condo so did not have to worry about the lawn but I would say a month and listen to your body. As for house cleaning it depends on what you mean. Anything that does not require any heavy lifting would be fine. I would be careful with vacuuming as you use a lot of stomach muscles. I guess trial and error would be a good rule of thumb. If it hurts then stop.

hmmmmm, i'm 4 months post op - still haven't told my DH i could do some cleaning :Donly kidding,

truth is you probably should wait a bit, if you are really sore or just too tired, you should not vacuum and all that good stuff, relax, get some rest, let others take care of you for a bit ,remember you just had major surgery..

You'll know when you start to feel better, just use your common sense.

I drove and did LIGHT housework at Day 5. I was told not to do any lifting of anything more than 5 pounds until cleared by the surgeon. My first post-op appointment is at Day 20 so it will be at least until then.

The only kind of exercise I was told I could do is walk.

I am 5 days out today and took my girls to the movies that is 2 miles away and was fine. My doc said not to drive until I am off pain meds and feel strong enough to stop car in an emergency.

The housework is going to be put off for. Bit, little to do with surgery, lots to do with me being lazy. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
