Can't Get Anything Down

Recommended Posts

Was sleeved last Thursday & I can't get my required amount of Water or protien down. Yesterday I worked on a 23oz bottle of water from morning to night & still had some left. Protein Drink I the same. It hurts to sip or drink anything. Even 1 oz shots of fluids will go down but it's like instant heart attack pains. I'm taking prevacid "that I never had to take before" I know it will eventually get better it's tuff. I am not hugary at all but I make myself sip water & set my phone alarm to try broth or Soups or yogurt & I only get about 3 spoonfuls of that stuff & I can't handle anymore. Anyone else had this problem?

Probably most of us. Water is most important now, keep working at Protein. It WILL get better so don't get impatient. (Easy for me to say, huh?)

Yup, what they said ^^^

Just take it easy. Don't stress too much about getting all your Protein in at this point, but be sure to try to get your liquids in. Dehydration could mean a trip to the ER for an IV bag of fluids.

I third that. Just focus on your liquids for the first couple weeks. The most important thing is to stay hydrated. Dehydration can be AWFUL lol..seriously..don't stress yourself out about it. Things will get easier as you progress.

I agree. It's one day at at time... one hour at a time even. And it does get better. BTW, just to share my experience: I was instructed to ge one oz of Fluid every 8 to 10 minutes. NOT FASTER! That gives you an idea that the sips are indeed very tiny! It would take a while to work on that one once! I would use a one ounce plastic shot glass and fill it and work on it slowly. When I finished it, I'd fill it again. Just kept it full. It was less overwhelming that seeing a big bottle in front of me! Hang in there!!! Sending lots of good thoughts your way!!!

I was sleeved last wed I focused on hydration the first few days cause it took me a whole day to get 3/4 of a shake down the first day I was home it's better to stay hydrated the first few days than worry about Protein once the swelling goes down it will be easier this morning I was able to get my Protein Shake down in a lil over an hour . I've also been placing ice packs on my belly to help with inflammation and swelling not sure if that's helped but since I've been doing it I've been able to get more fluids down !!!

It's not even a week yet, and they have you on Protein already?? I wouldn't worry about it. Liquids are the primary concern right now. After a week, SOME protein should sit alright.

I was 2 months out, when all of a sudden i was unable to eat or drink properly. Had the dry heaves, dehydrated - had to go to hospital to get hydrated. - what a bummer.

just keep drinking as everyone says, Protein will come in to play later - fluid/water more important as this time, take slow sips of liquid so you can keep it down. popsicles are also good, they are considered a liquid so they add for something, i really do love the purple popsicles.

BTW - please nix setting your alarm in the middle of the night to try and drink. you need your rest too.

good luck

I agree with Kathy and the rest of the peeps- #1.you'll wake up if you a thirsty. Get some rest. #2. Drink, Drink, Drink!!!

I was in the same boat. Ugh- and it's no fun! It's normal- and this too shall pass! Try sugar free popscles and maybe some light gatoraide. That really helped me.

Remember to sip slooooooooooowly. Don't rush it-

Hang in there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
