How Long Do U Have To Take Anti Acid Medication?

Recommended Posts

I've been taking nexium 40 mg for 4 weeks now. I notice a lot of people are off those meds but my instructions are to use it for 6 months. Any feedback will be much appreciated.

My doctor requires it for 3 months for non-smokers and 6 for smokers

I took mine until I noticed I didn't really need it anymore. That was at about the 3 month mark. Now I only take it when my stomach feels acid-y which is maybe once or twice a month.

hi nixi

I've taken prilosec since my WLS about 4 month ago. Don't know if i would have heartburn without the med, but why test the waters.

Kindof like car insurance, might never need it, but that one time....its worth using it.

Sara, I just viewed your latest video, and you look great! Thanks for the info.

Nixi, check with your doctor to see what he/she recommends. I too am taking Prilosec. I tend to forget to take it, but I think it does help with acid in the stomach, which can be uncomfortable. One night right after surgery, I felt the acid come up to my throat. I had GERD prior to surgery, and so I think it can be a problem even after surgery at least for a while.

I tried to stop at 3 months and woke up at night with reflux, so went back on Prilosec for another 4 months, then stopped and haven't needed it since. I'm 15 months post-op now.

For many it could be a lifetime requirement. 50% of all heartburn sufferers are asymptomatic. I never had symptoms but my voice would become very hoarse all of a sudden because of the acidity. Be careful.

Thank you so much! And you make a good point: if you had GERD before the surgery I bet that makes a difference in how much you deal with acid after the surgery. I never had an acidy stomach prior to VSG so I think I had an easier time of it post op with only needing Prevacid for a few months.

Ive been on Omeprazole for a zillion years- I tried going off of it and ended up going back on it only because I have a problem with my esophagus (nothing related to surgery) and feel much better on it. I think it is an individual thing.

I was given a months worth. I wish I had asked for more. I bought over the counter stuff and it is just not cutting it. I woke this am getting sick and dry heaving because my stomach is so acid even with over the counter meds.

I'm having a lot of trouble with reflux waking me up in the middle of the night. I wake up with a vomit taste in my mouth,..... very icky. It's been happening every night. I'm not eating for at least 3 hours before bed and have been sleeping propped up with pillows and even tried the recliner.

I'm taking Zantac 150 twice a day plus tums antigas as needed.

What is better than Zantac that I can try? That has always worked for me before.

(I'm typing this in the middle of the night because the reflux woke me up again)

That's GERD all right. Try prescription strength Prilosec or prescription strength Pepcid or Prevacid. Also try to eliminate food in your diet that could be contributing to the acid like orange juice, coffee, and chocolate.< /p>

I was told to stay on mine(Prilosec) to prevent ulcers from forming. (I'm a month post-op)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
