Vitamins And Minerals... Know Your Levels

Recommended Posts

So I recieved a call from my PCP on Friday evening saying that the labs I had on 4/12 for my 1 month post op were very low in potassium, magnesium and phosphate. She left a v-mail but she was concerned and was urging me to call her office or my surgeoum on Monday. Me, being a nurse and knowing how this can effect the body, called my bariatric coordinator who them contacted my surgeon. After reviewing my labs, he attributed my low labs to low B12 and I have to get a B12 shot on Tuesday. Now my B12 and Iron levels were low before surgery but my surgeon was sure that they would be back to "normal" because of the super Vitamins. I have been weak and a lilttle dehydrated since surgery. I'm not disappointed about having to get the shot or even having to get an iron infusion, if needed. I just want to feel better. Long story short, take your vitamins and keep up with your labs. Ask for copies, so you can know if you flucuate. I never new my levels until right before surgery so I know this is not a malabsorbation issue caused by my sleeve.

I hope it makes me feel better too. Funny thing is, an associate asked me to join her in losing weight and she would be getting B12 shots to boost the weight loss. I told her I was having surgery so I didn't want to join. Now I'm getting the shots because I am deficient.

I just got my labs done last week. Everything was excellent, but my Protein. That didn't surprise me. The doc explained why it's so important for me to get my numbers up. So I'm working on it.....but not very well. ) :

Thanks for posting this. I just had labs done for a separate issue and came back low on all the same things. They're starting me on the B12 shots, too. I was worried but hear they'll help me with my forgetfulness and the fact that I always feel tired. Here's hoping!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
