My Journey Of The Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

My name is Swilke - I am 5 ft. 196 lbs. I have been diagnosed with diabetes, liver disease, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism, high cholesterol and have a BMI 38.9. What a mess. I have of course been thinking of doing the lab band since it was first advertised, because who doesn't want to be thin. I said I wanted it, but really never qualified you had to be 100 lbs overweight etc. As the years have past, I began having medical issues the biggest being my liver disesase - they say it is caused by being overweight. My dr. put me on all kinds of diets but they all failed and ended in me gaining all the lost weight plus more. In December, my dr. asked me about doing the lap band and I agreed. We went through all of the paper work, and April 11, 2012 was my surgery date. In Delano, with Dr. K. I am 4 days out. I feel pretty good. I am concerned about not eating enough or being healthy. I am taking a liquid Multivitamin, 5000 vit d, vit B12, and Bioten. I have chewable Calcium pills.< /p>

My immediate family has been pretty supportive. My teenage kids have helped me and encouraged me. They have me in bed most of the time. I sneak up and do a load of laundry here and there, straighten up a bit, etc. I figure as long as I feel good then I can do it.

I look forward to this journey and hope that I can stay educated and knowledgable about how to keep me nourished and well. I am looking forward to meeting people that are going through the same experiences and be able to encourage oneanother. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
