Hi all

Has anyone been diagosed with Peripheral Neuropathy post gastic sleeve? I am eight months out and have lost 98 pounds. I now have total numbess and an inability to move my toes in my right foot. I have been ready this diagnosis is common in gastic bypass patients, but I can't find anything regarding sleeved patients. Very scary, going through extensive diagnostic testing. Thanks for any input.

I am pre-op, so not experienced... but my father had the same condition (unrelated to surgery) and it turned out to be a severe B12 defficiency (he was starting to lose his words, too, and was deeply depressed). Have you had your blood work checked recently? Dad received b12 shots twice a week for a period of time, and now gets them just once a month. He did regain the feeling in his limbs. He has some nerve damage, but most likely related to 73 years with epilepsy.

Please, please check your b12 levels. Wishing you WELL, dear.

My surgeon made it VERY clear to me that the absolute most important Vitamin that I could never ever ever slack off on is the B12 because of the serious long term damage that can be caused without it.

Unfortunately my aunt had the sleeve over a year ago. She was fine the first week but she couldn't eat anything or keep anything down. Which caused a B12 deficiency. It all happened so fast and she too had numbness in her legs and they moved her into the nursing he for in care there. Now she is home but in a wheel chair and always will be in one. Maybe if they could have caught it early enough it may not have been that severe so please get in to the dr ASAP and take care of yourself. We know our bodies the best.

You all caused me to run and take my B12. I take 2500 mcg sublingual 3x a week. It's over the amount they said I need, but this is what I found a Wally World. I knew it was important, but reading about the consequences really shocked me.

This worries me because I have come to realize that not everyone gets the same quality aftercare and information. I have a list of exactly how many nutrients I need to supplement to my diet. many folks get really vague instructions or none at all.

OMG -- Google

Vitamin B12 deficiency

This message should be pinned. Lisa, have him check for B12 deficiency. You might need therapeutic levels ASAP.

See what I mean?!!! Okay, let me dig out my paperwork. These are just the supplements:

1. Multivitamin with Iron 3x daily. Must contain 15-18 mg of Iron per serving. Must contain 400 mcg of folic acid per serving. Take with meals.

2. Calcium with Vitamin D. Take 1000-1200 mg per day. Do not take at the same time as the Multivitamin because Calcium interferes with iron absorption. Wait 2 hours after the multi. I take 2 calcium chews per day.

3. sublingual B-12. 500 mcg daily or 1000 mcg or more twice weekly. You can also get monthly injection from your PCP or a weekly nasal spray. B12 is not absorbed through the stomach. That's why the pill goes under your tongue.

4. Protein. you need between 70-90 grams a day.

5. Water/fluids. You need at least 64 oz. a day.

As a disclaimer: This is only what my surgeon told us to do. These were our instructions. As always, check with your own doctor as I am not qualified to give medical advise. Your mileage may vary.

I am just going to die. I havent taken anything since day one. I will do my bloodwork in 3 more weeks

You may be getting enough through food, but it's a good idea to get those supplements. They are available at any Walmart, Target, GNC, etc. The B12 is especially important as you can see. We aren't as tied to these as gastric bypass patients are. They don't absorb enough nutrients to live without supplements. We can fudge on it a bit, but this stuff helps. My multi also has Biotin in it. That's supposed to help your hair grow.

I was told not to take the gummie Vitamins. I don't think they have enough Iron if any. I was taking chewibles, these:

but I switched to this brand. (Bariatric Advantage). I also use their Calcium chews:

Y9u can also get this stuff off Amazon.< /p>

I was instructed by my doctor, I have religiously taken my multi Vitamin with Iron (Flintstones Chewables), my sub lingual B-12 (2500 mg) and my calcium citrate daily since surgery so we can't figure out what is going on! Lots of testing......Thanks for the responses.

I actually have them on my vessel and at my home. I just cant stomach the taste yet. I get my B12 in through my Protein shake and lemonade Vitamin Water. Grand total of 130% B12. I know I am low on Iron. It hovers around 40%. What I have actually been doing is holding off to get an accurate reading @ 3months on my bloodwork

LoL Hair growth. My wife takes the weedeater to my chest and back. I am one of those bears.

Hope they find you an answer fast. The first thing I though was blood sugar, but that's too simple right?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
