help...been banded 3mos...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!!! I am so very happy I found this site!! I have so many ?'s but my first and most important one is this. How do u know if the band is in place? I was banded in April and did not get my first fill for 2 months. I have only had that one fill and I can eat ANYTHING!!!! I can eat a whole sandwhich with no trouble. I hardly ever feel full or "restricted" and I am worried that the band is not in the right place. I don't go for a 2nd fill until the 28th of this month and I am almost back to my starting weight!! Does anyone have any ideas or words of advice? I welcome all. thanks in advance:omg:

Reggie,

Not having restriction doesnt mean your band is not in the right position, it only indicates that you need a bit more fill, and sometimes to find that 'sweet spot' takes a few goes. Until then try and eat more often but small amounts, that way you wont be hungry and also you'll be curbing the calories

A very important point to remember while you are in the process of adjusting your band, and sneaking up on your optimal fill level, is that JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN EAT IT, DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD. The band is only a tool, and the rest of the program depends on behavior change. You will need to work together with your band.

That said, I spent most of my first year with very little fill, and still was able to lose 60 pounds, and I could eat quite a bit a time...but much less than I was eating pre-band, sad to say.

Stay patient, and work on some little changes you can make to reduce the amount or calorie level of the food you are eating while waiting on the 2nd fill...hopefully, that will do it for you! Good luck!

Your band is just fine but you definitely need more restriction. It took me until fill #3 to know what real restriction was. Like you, I felt nothing after the first fill. Call your surgeon and move your second fill appointment up.

What's so bad about being able to eat a whole sandwich? I have been banded on 4 months, with no fill, have lost over 70lbs and eat sandwiches with bread (actually cheeseburgers, griled cheese with eggs, and pj's) at least once a or twice a week.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
