Is This Normal? Gross - Warning..

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on Tuesday. I have had probably 4 bouts of this happening.. I get an overwhelming urge to throw up, and I just end up spitting up foamy saliva. It lasts for about a minute and goes away. Please tell me this is normal and not something weird my sleeve is doing.. Should I worry?

If this is normal - how long will this happen?

This is normal. It is what we call sliming. I had it a few times..when I drank too much or too fast...or when I tried a certain food that my tummy wasn't really ready for yet.

It will become less common I think. I'm 3 months out and get it when I eat dense Protein too fast or overfill my sleeve. I got it the first time I ate a thin pork chop.

Early on, weird bits of nausea would just come up out of the blue: you know, salivating uncontrollably and then the nausea. It only happened a couple times, but it was weird.

Everything gets easier as time goes on -- except for the weight loss after the first year (or so I am told). I plan to hit goal way before then .. she says hopefully.

It occurs when we eat/drink too quickly or swallow too big of bites. It goes away only when our behavior changes.

YES it goes away. However even at 1 year 4+ months out if I eat too much I will get minor bouts of it, nothing like at first but still enough to gross you out. It teaches you to be very careful with the amount you eat and to STOP when you're full. Unfortunately some of us are stubborn and have to go through episodes of this to learn again to STOP.

I had sliming or frothing about 6 times total... last time was 5 months out. And I now sneeze mulitple times if I eat a little bit too much instead..... odd huh?

Since I am still on liquids, I think it is the way I am taking my pills that is making it do that. I have to break the pain pill into 2 and I have zofran to take. So I am taking 3 pieces right after each other. Maybe if I wait a couple minutes between each piece it will stop??

I think that is the sliming everyone refers to.

Yes, take some time inbetween. 10-15 minutes at least for starters.

You mean like when I got home last night famished and ate a chicken wing without hardly bothering to chew.

Yep - SLIME! I started getting it when I entered the mushie stage at the beginning of week 3. I get it if I eat the wrong things,or if I eat too fast, or too much. Usually I just throw up the slime, sometimes also the food... and then it's better. I'm slowly learning how to avoid it. It is normal, just really gross and uncomfortable.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
