I Gotta Come Clean - I've Altered My Pre Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Update: I'm down 6 lbs. since Monday so I must be doing something right. I have to admit it's getting a little easier too. It's true what they say about the first 3 days being the hardest. I'm still sticking to my Atkins Induced diet coupled with Protein Shakes the majority of the day. I'm curious to see where I'll be on Monday at the 1 week mark. I'll keep you guys posted.

I think the pre op diet depends on how heavy you are from what I've heard and read from others. Some have only 3 days others had 2 weeks. I was a big girl rolling in at 399. I stuck to my pre op diet one week out of two. EAS Carb control shake in the morning and lunch. Water And Sobe in between then turkey for dinner with salad. If i got hungry between that i'd add sugar free Jello or Protein shake. My body eventually got used to it. I cheated one day and had pizza and popcorn at night at my favorite movie dine in place but that's about it. Lost 20 pounds and it was all worth it. Was so scared my liver would be too big and my surgeon would call off the surgery. But turns out my liver shrank to normal size' date=' my surgeon was so stunned when he operated on Tuesday 4/10. He was so proud of me and liver, I felt like a champ lol. Liquid pre op is hard, no joke but you can get through it. Sometimes you have to tweak it to customize it to fit you.

Wow that's Awesome! So you only had liquids throughout does two were not including the day you cheated

Everyone at my surgeon has a 2 week liquid diet, regardless of BMI. I know this because a group of us went through pre-op education and testing together and we all started at the same time. We were all range of sizes, one woman didn't even look fat to me, just a few extra pounds.

Anyway, if I knew then what I know now, I would not have stuck to the liquid diet. I would have just went strict no-carbs at best. After surgery, I asked one of the resident surgeons who was involved in my surgery how my liver looked. He said it looked fine. Wanting details of how effective my "liver shrinking" diet went, I asked if it was too fatty and if it got in the way. He told me it doesn't really matter how big or fatty someone's liver is because they use a retractor device to hold it out of the way. Interesting.

I'm not sure if a person's BMI has anything to do with it either. I'm actually on the lower end and had to have 2 co-morbities to actually get approved. The surgeon still required a liquid diet for me.

I did have a two week liquid pre op diet and I am glad I did. By day 3 my cravings were gone and I had no desire to eat regular food, just wasn't hungry. Once I reached my surgery date I knew I had two more weeks of post op liquid diet and I wasn't worried about it, I had already done it for two weeks. :) And I have had no head hunger since day 3 of the pre op diet- this has made post op easier, IMO. Every surgeon has different requirements, the key is to be comfortable with and trust your surgeon. Good Luck with your upcoming surgery!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
