Rice - what was I thinking???

Recommended Posts

I was banded about a week ago, and yesterday I ate about 1 cup of white rice for dinner. What was I thinking? About an hour later, I hurt so bad that I took some Loritab and the pain went away for about 4 hours. Then it came back. So I took some more pain med and again, the pain went away for 4 hours. I swore right then and there I would never eat rice again. This morning, my stomach was sore as if I had a stomach ache. It lasted most of the day so I didn't eat until noon when I had some mashed potatoes. Finally my stomach felt right again around mid afternoon. For dinner I had some soft fish and everything has been okay since then. I guess the rice sat in my pouch and would not pass through. A word from one who would not listen to sound advice - don't eat rice during the mushy/soft food stage!

If you were banded a week ago, maybe you should stick to mushies/liquids. Especially if you irritated something...Just a suggestion.

dont know what your doc has told you, mine said that there is swelling for about a total of six weeks wether we want to realize this or not, I was on straight liquids for three weeks after surgery, then three weeks of musshy and then solids as tolerated.

This really helped me and now I am down a total of 86lbs and on my way to my target. You need to heal completly before you move on to RICE and those types of foods. Let it heal and it will happen.

Whew, I had my band placed in April and only tried rice three weeks ago and I promise you, I will never eat it again. The worst pain in my life. I guess that was a lesson learned. I can not imagine eating it just after being banded....

Yea, I am not big on rice. I recently found out that I can't handle eggs. I was forcing them for a while now and am finally listening to my band. I tried boiled (white part only), develed, scrambled, etc. No can do!!!

And popcorn. I can eat it anytime...any day. EXCEPT, in the evenings. I forgot and ate popcorn last night 2 hrs before bed and was up all night with a cup and rolaids!!! I won't make that mistake again!!:hungry:

I haven't had the nerve to try rice since I know that it swells in your stomach, but when I got home from my lapband, I decided to drink up the leftover Dr. Pepper. I drank quit a bit and I have to say I will never, never, never do that again. I had gas so bad that my stomach was swollen enormously, and, to say the least, I was not a pleasant person to be around. The worst thing was that it was during the first week of summer school and I had to hold in all that gas for 1 hour and 15 minutes every day lest I drive my students away. It was horrible. I laugh about it now, but at the time, it was awful. Live and learn.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
