What Do You Eat Now That You Didn't Eat Before Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was just reading the thread about "How Do You Get Your Protein" and it made me wonder about this. What foods do you eat now that you seldom or never ate before surgery?

For me, it's Protein drinks and Protein Bars. Pre-surgery, I'd have never considered eating/drinking either. I also have found myself eating a lot more seafood (shrimp and fish) and steak/beef than ever before.

In the other thread, I noticed that others seem to eat things that I wouldn't have considered before like cans of tuna and greek yogurt.

So, what new food habits have YOU picked up since surgery?

I eat more cheese than I did pre-surgery. Pre-surgery I would have never considered chunks of cheese as a critical part of my lunch. :)

I have always loved Peanut Butter. Pre-sleeve I always ate it with horrible guilt. Post-sleeve, I eat it with no guilt because it is a healthy Protein. By the nature of my tool, I am limited on how much I can eat. There are several things I can enjoy now just because I can no longer gorge myself on them. God bless the sleeve!! Kathe

Beans and cottage cheese are two foods items I hated to eat and now love! Also Protein Shakes I had sometimes but now is a daily staple. Just ordered Protein bars really excited to try those.

I've been a vegetarian for more than 8 years, but after surgery, to meet my Protein reqmts, I have started eating fish and chicken. Fish has become my fav source of protein.

Cottage cheese, imitation crab meat, tuna, and cheese as a stand alone.

For Breakfast or lunch everyday I have just cheese. Prior to surgery, cheese was a condiment of sorts. Now it's the main course. Pre-op, I never even tasted cottage cheese or fake crab.

chicken wings. I never ate them before because I didn't like meat with bones and they are messy. Now I eat them out a lot since they are small and high Protein. Also low carb. Plus I eat them so slow it is perfect.

Greek yogurt for me! Even when I first tried it after surgery, I could barely choke it down. Now, I actually look forward to eating it! I kind of consider it my guilty pleasure (for some reason, don't know why)

I was hoping I would fall in love with cottage cheese.....but after several attempts, I just can't eat it! The texture/consistency really gets me

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
