Weigh too much for band?

Recommended Posts

Wow Wheetsin I can wait to get to your starting weight....sad isn't it but I'm happy just to be out of the 400's.
Oh trust me, I've said that same thing to countless people here! People are getting their bands at my GOAL weight!

It will happen. It's definitely a battle. It's amazing what a decade of weightloss failures will do to you (me). It's amazing what the amount of power behind having to think, "I need to lose 200 POUNDS. I need to lose more than others getting the band even weigh pre-op!" I've encountered very inconsistent weightloss. Each time it stops, I have to fight off, "Well I guess the band has done all it can do for me" or "Well I guess that's all I'm going to lose". I know it's not right, and I know it's illogical, but that doesn't keep the thoughts from making their way in, even if just for a split second. In the last 6 weeks I've lost about 2 lbs, and sometimes they pop back in.

At my first consult with the doctor I was at 350 lbs. I TOLD him I wanted the band and nothing else! He is a major "pusher" of the by-pass, but I think he knew I meant business. On the day of surgery, after being on a pre-surgery diet, I was at 330 lbs. Today I am at 267 lbs.....feeling great and loving my band. So, making a long story short.....find a doctor who is band-friendly and talk with him/her about what you want. Good Luck!!!

Brenda DR.SZOMSTEIN is my doctor, I live in miami please call 786-252-1476. I am so sorry about your insurance. I know how you feel the doctor at palmetto hospital told me bluntly that he would not do the lap band for me.

He is my doctor also. I assume you are talking about the Dr. Szomstein at Cleveland clinic.

Getting back to the opening question of the thread:

When I was banded in Brooklyn (Sept, 2002) I weighed 327. My doctor told me (through his staff) that the average weight loss for Lap-Band patients is 25% of the amount between starting weight and ideal weight.

In my case at my height of 5'9", that would be 25% of 327-170 or 157/4 or about 40 pounds. The average for gastric bypass is 85%. So I could have expected to lose about 135 pounds.

Weight after stabilizing with Lap-Band would be 285#

Weight after stabilizing with gastric bypass would be 190#

I do not know if the figures have been updated in the past 4 years since I had my surgery, but I would guess they have.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
