Dr. Nicholson & Forest Park Medical Center

Recommended Posts

If you had surgery with Dr. Nick and/or at Forest Park Medical Center, I have a couple of questions:

1.) How long did you stay in the hospital?

2.) Did someone have to bring you your stuff after you went to a room? The paperwork I got said I wouldn't be assigned a room until after recovery and there was no place safe to store personal stuff until a room was assigned.

3.) Did you have an external drain? If so, when was it removed?

4.) What was given to you for pain when you went home?

I cannot think of anything else, but if you have anything thoughts you think might be useful to me, I welcome those comments too.

If all works out with work, I have a date. May 29th! Yikes! This is getting really real now.

Thanks in advance for any comments!

I had surgery with Dr Nick but at Baylor Plano (great hospital):

1. 2-days due to horrible nausea but I was aware that could happen. I was given Lovanox, Phengran and Ativan. The Ativan is what actually quailed the nausea. Dr. Nick visited with me before and after surgery.

2. My mother was with me so she kept all my personal items but the hospital provides lockers.

3. Yes I had a drain and an On Q-pump (medicine that goes into incision site). Both were removed prior to me being discharged.

4. You will be prescribed liquid Loratab & an PPI.

Overall I had a great experience with Dr. Nick. The first few days are rough but stay focused on your goals and you will get through it. I had little to no pain pain after the 11th day. Walk as much as you can as soon as you can, trust me it helps tremendously. I have lost 45lbs and tons of inches (have not updated ticker) since 1-23-12 day of my surgery. I workout 5-6 days a week for at least an hour. If the scale rules you put it away, I weigh daily for my own accountability. You will stall but don't get discouraged stay the course and the weight will come off. You have the best surgeon in the DFW area (my opinion)! Good luck to you and enjoy the ride. It is by far the BEST thing I ever did.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
