Will I Ever Be Able To Eat Rice Or Pasta Again?

Recommended Posts

Not that this is a deal breaker; I can live without rice or Pasta, but they are two of only foods I miss. I am 6 months out, and tried a few bites of rice the other day, and my stomach was so upset the rest of the day. Just wondering if these are out of my life forever??

Hope everyone had a good Easter weekend; I posted my Sunday update yesterday; hard to believe I am at Week 26 of 52 already! All is good, but the rice......

I was in the same boat at 6 months. At about 8 is when I could handle Pasta. I've tried rice since as well, but have opted for quinoa, since rice is so nutritionally void whereas quinoa has everything I look for in rice, plus some Protein. Needless to say, the quantity is a mere fraction of what I could do.

Went to Spag Factory couple weeks ago. I could finish a hearty portion before. Now, my wife and I split a hearty portion and I eat about an eighth. We get two more meals out of the leftovers. Gotta love it.

I had a bougie size 38 and handle Pasta and rice just fine. I chew it VERY well though and overcook it so all the swelling is done in the cooking and not in my stomach. I've heard that some people just can't tolerate it after VSG but some do. Good luck!

I can eat both rice and Pasta now, but only as of 1 year post op. My tummy does PREFER brown rice or Dreamfields Pasta better, which I'm used to these so I actually like eating them more.

White rice/pasta still gives me yucky issues to this day. Hang in there sweet lady! You'll be okay, and if all else fails, do your best to look around and find alternatives that work for you. Turns out if you're anything like me, you may end up liking them more.

I can eat rice and Pasta 3 months out, but like PDXman, I avoid them because they are nutritionally void. I do eat quinoa and whole wheat pasta that have high Protein stats.

Funny how everyone is so very different. I have been able to eat pasta/rice just fine since the beginning (I am almost six months out). Too easy, in fact.....never had an issue!

Then again, there is absolutely nothing my sleeve won't tolerate...and I had a 32fr bougie! Still trying to decide if this is a bad or a good thing!!

Sorry to be so lame......have been on this forum for 6 months.....but what is a bougie and what does the number mean? Is that the size of your sleeve?

I have an explanation HERE.

Remember that it is only a guide ... not necessarily the size of your stomach. If you Dr sewed tight to the bougie, then that would be your size, but if they don't, then your actual size would be larger. There is also the concept of the oversew, which would make it tighter. The bougie just ensures the sleeve isn't too small and/or actually doesn't get cut across all together.

I can tolerate a small amount of Pasta (like, 1 oz cooked at the most usually) but rice just makes me feel yuck. Not a problem for me as I don't really care that much for rice anyway. I typically buy the Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta for my family as the kids won't eat whole wheat, and the Smart Taste has less net carbs for my husband (he's prediabetic) and still tastes like white. I eat so little of it that it's really a nonissue for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
