Help! Can someone please tell me how the psych eval works! Psy-Med Bariatric Consultation has emailed me a 18 page questionire, to fill out prior to my appointment on Friday. I'm scared, what is the insurance company looking for? I have UHC Choice Plus. Anybody from Arlington, Texas?

The psych eval is no big deal. They are just making sure that you are psychiatrically stable enough to realize the decision you are making. Basically do you understand that this is lifelong and will require changes. Are you sane enough to understand that you have to follow up and follow diet/vitamin requirments. Seriously dont worry about it.

Viven I have UHC Choice Plus, I'm from San Antonio. Do you happen to work for JPMC by any chance? I've already done my eval, having surgery tomorrow!Like Kim mentioned the psych eval is no big deal. They just want to make sure you are stable enough to have the surgery and understand what will happen afterwards. It's a lifelong commitment so they just want to make sure you aren't looking for a quick fix and understand what needs to be done to maintain this commitment emotionally and physically. Just relax, be yourself, answer the questions and you'll be ok. Good luck on your journey!

Its really just a test. Mine consisted of a 259 question (that's right...not 260 but 259) online quiz and a one-on-one interview with the pychologist who did a memory test where you look at a series of shapes and have to redraw as many pictures as you can remember. The quiz was on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being most likely and 5 being the least likely. The quiz consisted of questions like...I like my mother...I hear voices...I see things that are not really there...I am always happy...I hate my mother...I sometimes wish I did not exist...I like to hurt myself...etc.

Its not a big deal...They just want to make sure you are normal and not suffering for any disorders that would impair your ability to make a rational decision.

Thanks everyone! One more question. I have been on Zoloft since November will this be a factor in the decision making? Also is telling them that I don't want to be in pictures consider me unstable? I know I'm weird!

The psych questionnaire is typically a personality inventory. As others have said, it is not a big deal. Just answer honestly and you'll be ok. The psych evaluation is supposed to determine whether or not you know what you are getting into, and if you understand what you are "electing" to do. Also, the psych will determine if you have realistic expectations and that you are ready for change. Being on an anti-depressent, or mood stabilizer, should not have any effect on your evaluation. Good luck to you in your journey! It's an exciting time!

Taking Zoloft and not wanting to be in pictures. hmmmmm - doesn't sound weird to me.

Repeating what everyone else has said, so you believe it, the psych evaluation is no big deal. Don't fret about it. You'll do fine.

Be excited for your new long wonderful journey that will bring you health and happiness.

good luck

kathy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
