Need Protein Information

Recommended Posts

I was scheduled to have a gastric bypass on 4/3, but came out of surgery with a sleeve. This was due to my intestine not reaching to it's attachment point for a bypass. I didn't really think it would ever happen since I was 8 BMI points below the risk of this happening, so all my pre-op education and research was based on having a bypass.

So, today I just realized that I may be open to other types of Protein that I couldn't have with bypass. I was always told that the only kind of protein I would absorb was whey protein isolates. Since my intestines are still intact, I'm assuming that's no longer true.

Could anyone please tell me if all types of protein are acceptable for sleeve patients? I feel as if I have kind of come into this blind since I had prepared for a bypass. After the little research that I've done since I've been home, I am so thankful for things turning out this way. The sleeve seems much safer long term and and every bit as effective.

No, it's still true you should have whey isolates. Most other Proteins are incomplete, I believe. Congratulations on your surprise sleeve - I hope you will be very happy with it!

That's not true, casein and soy proteins are also complete.

I posted this a few days ago, it may help. I've not looked seriously into pea or hemp Proteins, but I don't think they're very good.

All just MHO...

In terms of types of protein:

Hydrolysate Proteins are the best quality proteins (in terms of what comes in a mix).

Next would be whey Protein isolates - especially good because they come lower carb. For he slightly reduced absorption compared to the hydrolysate proteins, the whey Protein isolates are my first choice (because they're low carb, I think they're much better tasting, and are absorbed quickly.)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
