Hey all. I'm in home health care and I take care of a child that is 65 pounds.

I will be having surgery right before his summer vacation so I wont have to lift him or push his wheel chair up the ramp.

My doctor's nurse said at 4 weeks out, I will be able to lift 20 lbs.

So my question is, When can I lift more than 20 lbs. *I have a 25 lb pug that i will need to lift at some point too!*

and more specifically When can I A) push his wheel chair up the ramp ? (its about 100 lbs all together and usually i am half winded after but thats just because of my weight now.) and B) When will I be able to Lift my 65 lb patient without risking a leak or something??? Help!!!!

Thanks in advance!!!

This is something you will want to check with your dr. I am 4 weeks out and last week I tried shooting a basketball a few times with my son and extending my arms high was a little uncomfortable so I stopped. Not because of the weight of the ball but as I threw the ball my stomach stretched and I felt a little ouch. If I bend too much usually picking up my sons clothes my stomach will fill sore. Listen to your body. Don't overdue it. My dr says it takes about 6 months for your stomach muscles to heal on the inside. You will have a one month check up after your surgery so ask then. By then you will know how your body responds to certain things. I think you will be ok with your dog but I worry about lifting 65 lbs at one month. Sorry I wasn't much help.

I'm surprised there aren't more responses here. I'm sure there are others with active jobs. I'll just wait....

I will be anxious to see this as well. I don't need to lift on my job, but I do a lot of active gardening, and work around my own house.

I was cleared for lifting weights at 1 month. Every doc is different. I would say after a month try it. You probably won't be cleared any earlier than that.

I am really really surprised that no one has a good answer for us. I am a mother of three. When will I be able to lift my kids? Anyone?

How long after surgery before you will have to lift him? I was told no lifting over 10 lbs for 6 weeks. I went for my 8 week appt and was cleared , no more weight restrictions, I was told I can even do sit ups now. I was lifting stuff before my 6 weeks was up cause I have a huge yard and am always doing work outside. Heck, we built a 100 feet of fence when I was 4 weeks out. Everyone heals differently, some quicker than others so...check with the dr, maybe a back brace, the kind you wrap around and velcro will be sufficient? I wish I had a better answer but...good luck to you!

Not sure....how ever long i need. His mom (my patients mom) said take as much time as i need, she'll help me lift him. Most ill have to do is push the wheel chair up the ramp and maybe transfer him..when im ready. i dont HAVE to lift him til im ready. So, does that mean after the 4-6-8 weeks past the 20 lb limit...i'm free to lift ANY weight?

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
