How Long Did You Wait For Spicy Foods?

Recommended Posts

This isn't in my guidelines, and I've left the nutritionist a message but she won't call back until Monday. I'm just curious, how long you waited before introducing spicy foods? I know that things like capsaicin can be irritants, I'm just curious what the average wait time is before reintroducing them.

Without thinking yesterday I bought a bowl of hot and sour Soup (family wanted Chinese) thinking it's broth based, and the tofu/egg would be good eats, and I'd just strain out the rest. I didn't even think about it being too spicy, because I like things hot and to me this soup is not hot at all, but it probably is to most people. I got a two or three toddler spoonfuls in before it even dawned on me that the spice might be too much for the sleeve so I stopped and got a Water. I felt fine, but it left me wondering how long spicies should be postponed.

Now I'm missing my vinegar and Sriracha additives.

I didn't introduce any spicy liquids during my 21 days post-op but once I started soft foods I did make my homemade spaghetti sauce which is spicy and meatballs and I tolerated it just fine. I have had a few other spicy things and had no problems. My NUT didn't have any restrictions on spices only carbs - lol!

I had no restrictions on spicy foods. I had a five week post-op full liquid diet and I was adding hot sauce after a few weeks out. By hot sauce, I mean the smooth types, like "Tapatio" (my favorite) and Tabasco.

I live for spicy so I specifically asked about this.

After four weeks of mostly sweet liquids, as soon as I could have soft food I started adding Thai garlic chili paste. I craved flavor. It didn't bother me at all at that point.

I love spice, and we were told to not be afraid of it. The first day I was on purees I made cream of chicken Soup on top of mashed potatoes with paprika. It was amazing. My first day on soft foods we had homemade chili. I haven't had any negative reactions from eating these foods.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
