Pickles/relish - When Can I Have?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am on soft foods this week and regular foods next week. I understand that tuna is high in Protein and I plan on getting some, but ever since I was a kid I have eaten tuna with a little bit of sweet relish mixed in - Is this ok??? I keep seeing things that say no pickles or relish? I love both!!!! When can I have them?

I was able to eat them when I hit the "mushy" stage but you should check with your doc.

I dont see why not, how much are you really gonna use in that small amout of tuna? Its not like you are eating cups of it, I say go for it, if it helps you get your Protein in.

day 8 post op I pureed tuna and put pickles and spicy peppers in it. I just ran the pickles & peppers through my mini food processor. No problems for me.

Yup, used relish in mine. Where did you read no relish? It's a pretty soft food.< /p>

Maybe the relish/pickle issue is because vinegar is acidic and at least at first we need to avoid acidic foods. On the other hand, a tiny amount mixed with another food doesn't sound too bad but check with Doc or Nutr for sure.

Well, we definately shouldn't be eating anything remotely like relish in the first week. That is liquid stage. I think we're talking several weeks out, right?

I tried pickles 3 weeks out and tried a bite and waited to see how it went done. I'm 4 weeks out and can eat pickles fine. Funny thing is I hardly ate pickles before my surgery and have cravings for them.

Vlasic makes sugar free relish, sweet gerkins, and bread and butter pickles that are 0 calories. I have been using all of them since I started the mushie stage and haven't had any problems. They are great for the crunch factTor too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
