Surgery Date Before Insurance Approval?

Recommended Posts

I went to the surgeon's office a couple weeks ago to start my 3 month diet with the nutritionist. She asked me a few questions and then asked me if I was firm on the August date. I told her I could do the surgery as soon as the insurance approves me. She then said you can have your surgery as soon as your 3 month diet is completed and scheduled a surgery date. I'm just wondering if this is common. I have Federal BCBS and my BMI is 55.

I never had to ask about approval with my insurance so maybe yours is the same. I went for my first visit to the bariatric clinic on Oct 20th,2011 and they were wanting to do the surgery the first of December! Some Dr's offices just know how to work the approval game better than some.

I guess each office has their own guidelines. Prior to insurance approval, my surgeon asked me when I wanted my surgery, but I never actually scheduled anything until the approval came through. I have BCBS of Texas and I was approved very quickly. Good luck to you!! ")

Hi cream puff! I have BCBS Fep, also. My nutritionist and surgeon consult are next Thursday-12th. I've been told to expect approval ASAP after the 3-month period so either late July or very early August for the surgery. I'm getting excited and I am still months away.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
