Hi!

I was just given my surg. date in 4 weeks. As part of the pre-op I had to have an endoscopy. I did not have any symptoms, this was done as part of the prelims for surg.

I just received a call from my doc and was told that I have Barrett's esophogus and that I should not have the sleeve but opt for the bypass instead.

Has anyone heard of this or dealt with a similar problem. I am reading alot about those of you that have the haital hernia, but haven't seen anything about Barrett's.

Thanks for helping out!

Hi!! Yes I had to have 2 endoscopies done. The first one 'suspected' the Barrett's. Because of this, I had to go for an EUS which is a endoscopic ultra sound. This is a much more thorough test and they actually biopsy the esophagus. I was told that a regular endo doesn't see as much as the eus. By having this done, they saw no indication of Barrett's. My surgeon told me the same thing. Sleeve is not recommended for ppl with barretts. Can cause severe acid reflux, and can cause esophageal cancer. Most ppl who have Barrett's never know they even have it. I'm thankful it was ruled out for me. Did they suggest an EUS for you?

Thanks for responding! They did a biopsy while they were in there and I have another meeting Mon with my doc. I need to find a GI doc ASAP.

Did you have the sleeve and do you have issues with reflux?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
