What Would You Consider Being The Worst Thing About This Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Toyier, You may want to post your own thread for advice. You'll get more people to answer your questions. :) Also, there is a pre-op forum here that has tons of great information for the pre-op folks! :) I have no idea how much time you're going to need off work. A lot depends on what you do for a living. I only took 8 days and went back to work the same afternoon that my drain was removed. However, I have a pretty non-physical job. If you have to do lots of walking, bending or carrying heavy weights, you may need more time.

Feel free to PM (private message) me if you like, but I'm betting most of your questions will be answered in that pre-op forum. If they aren't, just hit me up with your questions and I'll get back to you asap.

During the first 3 months, there's a lot of trial and error. You'll have a bite of something that should be "safe" e.g. cooked salmon for me, and then you are in pain, sliming, and sweating. Then next week it goes down just fine.

These are some great things to think about. I am about 5 weeks out from surgery but I really appreciate reading things like this to prepare myself for what lies ahead.

I completely agree with Lissa -- the hardest thing about this was the pre-operation liquid diet.

Right after surgery, it was very hard to get 64 ounces of Water down. It worried me, but it happened eventually.

The first two weeks post op were pretty rough for me. I had a lot of pain until about 3 weeks, now at 4 weeks I feel great..I'd say 100% back to normal.

Hi

2 things driving me nuts at the moment.

1. It feels like my vision is 40% worse than before the surgery.I have to really focus my eyes to see straight.

2. My memory seems to have evaporated.I have messed up every pin number we had.I am so anxious the whole time.feels like I am forgetting stuff I'm suppose to be doing. This really is a huge concern at the moment.I do not have the luxury to not be "all there" even for a few days...

Hi,no idea what it is.I used mycostatin for quite a few days as I thought it was thrush. Now I am suing daktarin gel but it doesnt make much difference.

If it is still here by next week I will phone the dr.

If anyone knows how to get rid of it,please shout!

The worst part for me is not being able to chug Water, and not being able to drink while eating. I used to be able to get a good 100oz of water in a day. I'm 3 weeks post op and now I'm luck if I can get 40oz in a day. Other than that, it's been great so far.

Hi everyone - the worst part for me for sure was the pre-op required upper GI and then another one (for a swallow test) the morning after surgery. Drinking that stuff was...I still get icky shivers just thinking about it... The first week or so was a real challenge both physically and emotionally. I went through a bit of a panic and felt some anxiety over the permanent decision I'd made. But, nine weeks out now, I am getting use to "the new me" and am feeling really good all around.

This happened to me for a few days after surgery! I thought perhaps my eyes were open during surgery, because when I came too they were also scratchy and watery until I got a really good sleep. I don't know how long it has been for you, but in my case it did get better ... hope your vision does too :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
