Hormone Grehlin Also Responsible For Memory?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed memory loss. I'm usually very good with remembering things and keeping lists etc;

I tried to remember tje best way home from my brother's house tonight and my head seemed foggy. I get the stupids too. I've done some really dumb stuff.

Since this topic came up again, I think there's a little confusion. In obese people there is an elevated level of ghrelin which increases incidences of memory loss. Memory loss is because too much ghrelin, not too little. You should see better memory, not worse after surgery...which is what most have said they have experienced :).

What was the question again?

:)

No really' date=' I haven't noticed any memory loss. In fact I was much more of a scatterbrain during my pregnancies than I am now.[/quote']

I know this isn't funny-- but my response was-- maybe but I can't remember! :)

Where did you get this information? I have read other articles about the link of increasing ghrelin in lab mice, increasing memory. Yours was the first post I have seen that said the opposite. Can you provide a source?

That being said, I haven't really noticed a loss or gain either way. I still forget things but before surgery I was putting it to "old age"....but I really don't think it is much different than any one else. I was glad that I didn't have some type of obvious memory loss or I probably wouldn't be able to do my job....I have to keep a lot in my head! Almost 3 months out and it is a non-issue.

Only thing I have trouble remembering is to eat and drink. Otherwise, I actually feel a bit sharper post-op.

I have hashimoto's hypothyroidism which tends to make it so that my short term memory is not so good. There are times when I can't even recall what I did that same morning. I can't say that after VSG this has gotten worse even though my hypothyroidism has gotten worse. So perhaps VSG is helping to even out the decrease in thyroid function memory issues.

Glad this post was bumped! I'm 6 months out and haven't noticed a decrease or an increase. I am about the same.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
