Hormone Grehlin Also Responsible For Memory?

Recommended Posts

I was just reading in another forum that the hormone that is cut off with stomach is also responsible for memory and there have been people that are having trouble remembering things. Is this true!? Anyone else post off with same issue?

I haven't had my surgery yet but this does concern me. If this side effect is real, I am concerned that I will not be able to continue in my career field. Of course, the other health issues I am hoping to avoid like diabetes, high blood pressure wouldn't be too good for my career either so I will hope that it is a minor side effect that I can live with.

I haven't had this happen. Other parts of your body secrete Grehlin so you still get it pumped to your brain. The stomach is the largest producer of it, however. You shouldn't put off this life-saving surgery if you are afraid you will lose your keys a little more often.

Ha...who am I? oh wait I'm kidding...no memory loss going on here either. I hadn't read a hunger hormone would effect regular memory...but it makes sense if it effects your eating habit memory....WHICH I AM VERY GLAD CHANGED!

I know this isn't a laughing matter but this made me chuckle... :P

What are all the effects of this lack of Grehlin? I think I missed something here.

I think moonsiren is the most accurate here. There are other body parts that produce the hormone..however there are some people that experience spelling and articulate issues. Some say that they are only temporary and cannot really determine if they are due to the hormone or the body's reaction to change and less nutrition. Let's research this topic more. I believe it would be beneficial for folks that have had this surgery a few years ago to comment on this topic. It would be nice to hear from those folks.

I have not noticed any change since my surgery on Dec 11, 2011 but I will certainly do some research and see if I can find out more. I had not heard anything about this so find this very interesting. Thanks for you post.

I saw the post that you are referring to on this forum. Ghrelin does help our body to maintain temperature and may have some indications for memory. Truthfully, I noticed a positive difference in my mental acuity once I was back on solid food and again when I added B12 to my supplement routine. I'm not sure what the base reason was, but I don't think it was solely ghrelin. I've also read that the body will create ghrelin from other sources at some point post-op.

Good luck!!

I fretted over this for a bit because in my field, I can't afford to have a poor memory, either. Has not been an issue, thankfully. I mean, it's not like I've done some sort of standardized test before and after the surgery where I could objectively compare the results, but looking at my marks/job performance and just remembering day-to-day stuff, I don't feel like my memory has gotten worse at all.

I was talking to a friend who had lap-band 4 years ago in Tijuana performed by Dr. Ortiz. She said one side effect is "the stupids". These posts are specifically talking about memory. Our brains don't function correctly without proper nutrition. I don't think ghrelin is related to memory, but not getting property nutrition is related.

If you Google it, you will see plenty of scientific articles where they discuss the connection of memory to ghrelin. It seems to be more recently discovered and I think some aspects are still in debate. The thing that keeps me OK, is the fact that they do have synthetic ghrelin which they are experimenting with for elderly patients so I figure that if there is a memory issue, I can take ghrelin supplements :)

I haven't personally had an issue at all. I don't think I've personally read any posts about that but perhaps it's a small % of patients who had that as a side effect. I mean, who knows? The hormone changes can maybe cause a bit of forgetfulness like being pregnant does sometimes.

I've only notice that my memory and alertness have improved since surgery. I think this is from better nutrition and the fact that I do not wake up 60 times an hour to to sleep apnea. I used to be one of the walking dead.

Google "grehlin" and you will find all sorts of interesting information. I researched this a lot post surgery, because from the very first walk in the hall at the hospital post op, my osteoarthritis has no longer been a problem. I took massive amounts of NSAIDS prior to surgery and was very concerned I would not be able to continue and would be in constant misery from my knee and ankle pain. Literally from the first time I put weight on my knees after surgery, I have had no arthritic pain. It is like a miracle. I am in my mid sixties, so I figure the memory will be going soon anyway!! (ha) But at least I will weight less and hurt less. KathePS I don't remember seeing anything about memory loss...K

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
