Just Approved For Sleeve And Have Questions

Recommended Posts

Hi-

I was just approved by my insurance for Gastric Sleeve surgery and I'm very excited and apprehensive at the same time. I have been reading everything I can about the subject and there are so many horror stories and negative things written about side-effects from the procedure.

I am sure that for most people, the results have been worth whatever discomfort you may have during recovery, but what does sound frightening is the possibility of leakage from the stomach incision. Seems to me that if you are compliant with the liquid diet the first few weeks after the surgery, the stress on the staples would be minimal---- but if you try to eat solid food too soon, then you have a better chance of problems with leakage.

I don't have my surgery scheduled yet--- just got my approval in the mail yesterday, so hopefully tomorrow I will be able to set a date.

I have struggled with my weight for so long and I'm really excited---but nervous as well.

I would appreciate any comments anyone has..

Thanks!

Randall

Ask your surgeon or staff about his or her success rate and how many leakage issues they have had. I did and it put my mind at ease. Complications are rare but do happen. Any fears you have, its best to talk to your surgeon. He or she should have answers that will help you. I just got approved today myself! Good luck to you!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
