I there, my NUT hasn't gotten back to me yet, so I'm going to ask you guys. I'm 4 days post op and on full liquids (not just clear). I can have Decaf coffee and Splenda, but I need a Creamer and didn't ask about the sugar free or fat free nondairy flavored Creamers. Can I have those? What's been your experience? Thank you.

If you are on full liquids' date=' I would say cream is fine. You can also cream your coffee with some mixed up vanilla Protein. Clear liquids is another story.[/quote']

Yes I'm on full liquids. I was worried the fat in the cream could cause me to dump even though i know it's from milk. The sugar free Creamers seem to have very minimal carbs. Thank you so much for your help. I will hold off a bit longer and then watch the carb content when I do end up trying it. I appreciate you responding. :-) you look great, btw and nice to meet you.

I don't think I have ever had dumping although I have had some ill effects from deep fried food early out. Sugars usually trigger dumping in VSG and even at that it is very rare. Dumping can occor in anyone WLS or not. I have always used half and half in my coffee, one of the things I always allowed myself even when I was in the "losing" stages. At this point in time, you will be struggling to get in 600 calories a day so I wouldn't worry about it. Every nut and every Dr have their own opinions. I have come to find that most of them just cut and paste an RNY diet and don't even bother to look at the VSG diet as anything different. I was lucky, my team did and taylored my eating and drinking plan to the VSG and everything worked. Good luck and welcome to the losers bench!

I used half & half at your stage & still do most days. That other stuff has sooo many chemicals in it & 2 tbsp of the real stuff is low in cals & sugar & carb free. I wouldn't drink a glass of it lol but a splash in your coffee won't hurt :)

Thank you! Yes, I've been fortunate to have gone through a Center For Excellence for my VSG. They have taylored diets pre and post op for each wls procedure they do. The NUT has done so much of her own longer term research with bariatrics patients and knows what works for most! So glad you had a great one also!! I'll use my 1/2 1/2 and Splenda, and see how I like it. Thanks!!!

Hi Susie,

I gave up coffee until I was 3 months post op. I stayed with tea and progressed back to caffeine slowly just to let my stomach heal (this topic goes back and forth, I think it is all personal). My surgeon said ok for regular coffee at 2 month appt. I used to use half /half and splenda before surgery because of so many years of Atkins. Now post surgery I use a splash of Soy light, sf vanilla and 2 Stevia, really yummy.

Just be careful with your new tummy.

Sandy

ONce again, Different Drs have differnt opinions. I was a shift worker so caffeine was a neccesary evil. I asked if I caould have coffee and was told as long as it isn't a high calorie Starbucks type of drink I was fine and to use it in moderation. BTW, in the UK, they count coffee as Water. I think I will go by the UK rules to get my fluids in!

I would use real cream, half and half or whatever milk you are using. Non-dairy is full of chemicals. My daughter use to drink the table coffee cream and I never let her drink the fake stuff.

I'm still convinced that very few sleevers dump. We still have our stomachs and nothing is bypassed. I eat a small amount of sugar and definitely dairy. My milk, cottage cheese and yogurt are 2% and my cheese is full fat. Lowfat cheese is a sad thing unless its mozzarella or Laughing Cow.

Some people are lactose intolerant and fried food makes them queesy, but dumping happens when sugar and fat are dumped straight into the intestines not fully digested. We still have our stomachs and a pyloric valve that regulates food going into the small intestine.

From what I hear both immediate and late dumping are tortuous enough to keep people a mile away from sugar. My surgeon thinks that the sleeve doesn't work as well without this Pavlovian reaction. I disagree -- at least for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
