I feel so depressed. It is 4 days out from surgery. I can't stand 11 more days til soft foods. I feel like I'm mourning something. I can't even put on a good face for my child. She is 7 years old nd had a hard time with me going under the knife in the first place. I can't let her see me all sad. I can't go and visit friends when I'm still craving solid food and am so emotional all the time! Please help! How did you being your mood up during those first hard days?

The first week was hardest for me, I definitely got depressed. It does get better with each passing day and week. I found that trying to take even the smallest walks, taking a shower, watching a funny TV show, or encouraging others on this forum all good ways to stay positive. I think one of my first walks was literally across the street and back! Maybe play a board game with your daughter, or if you can do a creative project like coloring or making Easter eggs!

I hope things turn around for you soon, please call your doctor if your symptoms get much worse.

Sorry, I don't feel like I can do those without bursting into tears. Per-existing clinical depression being treated with meds. Thanks for the encouragement though.

So burst out in tears and tell your daughter the truth! You don't know for sure why you are crying but sometimes going through surgery messes with your emotions and hormones for a while and apparently it has got mommy's tear ducts. Tell her how much you love her and that you are not truly sad, but thrilled that you had the surgery and everything is going to be okay. Talk about all the new things you will be able to do with her after you heal. (Just my opinion  )

I was on medications for depression before surgery. I think that it is just something that I have to live with always. I do not think that just because I lose 90 pounds that my depression will go away. Maybe I am wrong but I think that the depression has deeper roots than weight. I suggest that when you are alone that you have yourself a good cry. It always seemed to help me when I was really down. Also try and keep yourself busy. Do you have any hobbies???? Call a friend of just get out of the house and go for a walk and look at nature. Hope that things get better for you soon.

Soooo sorry to hear you are struggling much!! Sounds like food was a big source of comfort to you and you probably nurtured yourself with it. And now you can have any at all... For the moment. But you will!! I'm 11 months post op and so far there's nothing I can't eat. Of course my portions are much much smaller. You will get here too. Just enjoy each day when the scale is showing you've lost weight. Enjoy feeling your belly shrinking and being able to move and breath better, being able to get on the floor and play with your child, and mostly the gift you are giving to your child that you will live longer!

I was extremely depressed in the beginning, OMG what the heck did I do, why did this get to this point, I am never going to be able to sit down and have a meal with my family, this is the biggest mistake of my life, if I get sick one more time I am going to loose it, I just want to feel normal.

Give it time. I know I know its hard but each and every day things get better. You start to be able to drink more, eat more, more often and variety, and you start to loose weight. By the 1st month you will see. Just hang in there and know you are not alone and its completely normal for some of us. Good luck.

Wow, I can relate! I had my surgery on 2/20 and im just now starting to come out of my depression. It was such an odd experience, I could not even wrap my head around what was happening to me after surgery. I think the first week was ok because I was drugged up. I then began the journey and have struggled since. I think I was in some kind of denial about the fact that I was an emotional eater. It sounds odd but I really didnt realize how much food consumed my everyday. I loved to cook, have parties, plan for my meals, eat out at numerous restaurants....OMG seriously i lived for food. Well, I now have been struggling with all this free time.... now that things dont revolve around food. Its really hard!!!!! I find that I am weak and not able to muster up energy for much of anything, so I kinda sit and waste time thinking about how things used to be. I have lost a total of 43 pounds since I first started this journey so I know that things are going well but Im finding it hard to be thrilled about the loss when I am mourning another loss of aaaah my best friend/enemy....LOL can anyone relate????

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
