My Post Op Diet Seems Less Strict Than Most Others

Recommended Posts

Yes. Dr. Kim is my surgeon... I am in my 6 month supervised diet phase and would consider changing surgeons just based on the pre op diet thing. There are very few Protein powders I can stand and he is adamant that you use Optifast or bari-essentials. I would MUCH rather eat lots of fruits and veggies! I would enjoy it way more and it would probly NOT cost me $200 for the 2 weeks!! I may call them on Monday. THANKS!!!!

I was sleeved the same day as you were and my doc wants me to do Clear Liquids and Protein shakes until April 19th (Basically 4 weeks out)

Ditto - I had to do clear liquids and Protein Shakes for 4 weeks too, Then full liquids for 2 weeks and pureed food for 2 weeks. I could go to solid food only on week 9.

Well, I can't say enough good things about the whole procedure and everyone involved. The supervised diet doctor is Dr. Garza next door, and she and her staff are also wonderful. Dr. Garza's office sells the unjury brand Protein powders but I was not required to buy it. I just did because it was easy. Dr. Cribbins' office sells the Celebrate Vitamins, but they were not required. I bought them because I figured why not, but I grew to hate them and then I believe I developed an allergy to them so no more of that!

Basically, my food plan was:

Very low fat and vegetarian for two weeks prior to surgery. I got my surgery date less than two weeks out, so I didn't even have the whole two weeks of pre-op diet.

Clear liquids for three days following surgery (I was in the hospital those three days, no problem)

Full liquids/thinned pureed foods for five weeks. I think at four weeks I was allowed to add crackers to Soup and that was pure excitement! lol

After that, I got to introduce regular foods gradually.

I was terrified of the pre-op diets that I had read about on this site. I didn't think I could comply with full liquids for several weeks pre-op (post op was a piece of cake - did I just write that?). I was so relieved to find out, after I was almost through the process, that Dr. Cribbins has an easy pre-op diet. I would just double check, if you call, that everything is still the same because things might change.

Dr. Kim is the best! Don't go. Just bear out the liquid diet. I've tried many many Proteins already, and I'm here to tell you, Bari Essentials is NOT bad in comparison to some of the wretch I've tried since surgery!! He does that because he wants a level playing field and a consistent outcome. The liquid is not only to shrink the liver, but to clean out the digestive tract before surgery. With the Bari Essentials you are getting COMPLETE nutrition. Your body wants for nothing! I felt great while doing it. I had to battle my head talking to me of course, but my body did super. He did a great job on my surgery, and I've not had ONE complication, have not thrown up, or felt bad or ANYthing. Don't give up on him because of pre op. :) Oh, and the vanilla is better than the chocolate...FYI. You can add stuff to it (sugar free Jello and flavorings and such.)

I was able to begin thick liquids such as pureed foods, yogurt, hummus and thinned oatmeal (only the instant kind) as of day 3 (today). I will be at this stage for about a week, and can then add in soft foods such as moist deli meats and eggs.< /p>

I had surgery March 21, just over a week ago. I was only on Clear liquids till I left the hospital Friday, once I was home I was allowed to switch to puréed food already. Was any one else allowed to start purees so soon? Also had no special per op diet got to eat regular food up untill 8pm the night before surgery.

I'm scheduled for April 19 and I also have no liquid diet pre or post-op. I'm not able to have anything after midnight the night before surgery, and will probably be on liquid only for the two & a half days in the hospital. From there my stage 1 diet is pureed. Weeks 2-4 are soft foods and after week 4 (or whenever stage 2 food is well tolerated) is general diet. My pre-op is just low fat, low carb, high Protein. I'm getting sleeved in Milwaukee at the Froedtert Hospital & Medical College of WI.

Wow at all the variations! i was on clear liquids for a week with no Protein Drinks, then full liquids and Protein drinks for a week, then pureed and protein drinks for a week, then soft foods for 2 weeks, then regular, but no steak, or bread or Pasta til 10 weeks. Sometimes they move you right from clear liquids to pureed and skip the full liquids from what I heard.

I had 2 weeks of clears, 2 weeks of full liq/soups and 2 weeks of mushies... Thank God that's over!!!

Nurse, try making your drinks w/ crushed ice.. I needed something to chew and it helped a lot...

I'm gonna actually try the crushed ice thing, pretty much anything that is not ice cold taste horrible. My daughter has a snow cone maker. I'm gonna shave some ice and pour my crystal light over it. So even though I can eat puréed food, and did earlier in the week I have no desire for food of any kind right now

Pre-surgery I have to start a liquid diet for two weeks, only Protein drinks for the 3 meals, and clear liquids otherwise. Day before surgery, clear liquids only.

Post-surgery I believe it is clear liquids until I go home from hospital, from then until first 2 weeks after surgery Protein shakes and clear liquids. At 2 week post op with Dr. then you get cleared for pureed and then mushy/soft but I can't remember how long for that, I think it was until 8 weeks after surgery. Soft includes tuna, fish, eggs, cheese, legumes, tofu, low fat turkey breast or ham, canned chicken. After 8 weeks introduce new foods, doesn't have to be mushy.

There does seem to be a lot of differences. I believe the liquid diet is to help shrink your liver to keep it out of the way during surgery.

This is what I have to do too! Plus 2 weeks of only Protein shakes and full liquids preop. I'm feeling kinda jealous of these other diets. :)

The AMA recommends liquids for two weeks post op & puréed foods for three weeks after that. I had Dr Kuhn in Medical City. My advice, listen to your body & concentrate on fluids.

We are all about the same. We should meet up & start a small support group.

Also, try the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury protien powders, they are fabulous.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
