The Truth About Hair Loss?

Recommended Posts

Me again. I feel I am lacking general knowledge that others seem to have learned before surgery. I had seen about Hair loss as a concern on this site by preop patients. But I have never known the facts. Yesterday a woman who had surgery at the same time as I did, told me I better start taking Biotin tablets to prevent hairloss. She says she was with a woman who had surgery a few months before we did and that the woman was almost completely bald and was wearing a wig! I have such very thick hair, and can't imagine losing hair. I should be careful what I say, but I have the worst hair and don't care that much about it. However, I certainly don;t think being bald would improve my appearance and I might become grateful for this thick, thick mop that I generally try to hide under a sunhat.

Seriously though. Should I be worrying and should I be taking preventative measures? This woman told me that the hair loss comes around 4 months post op. Is this accurate? I did lose Patches of hair following neurosurgery but my surgeon told me that it was likely related to stress. Those were 4 small, symmetrically placed circles on my scalp and with my so thick hair, even I had not noiticed, nevermind anyone else noticing. They were unnoticeable.

i am just wondering if I should expect hair loss, when I should expect it and if it can be prevented. Does it happen to everyone?

As always, thanks for your advice.

i am 3 months post op, i have been shedding for about 2 weeks now, im losing probably a hundred hairs a day give or take, i havent been able to tell, but we will see in a few weeks i guess. My NUT told me to do a round of Zinc for the Hair loss, so i am trying that. If that doesnt work i will try the other remedies. I guess it wouldnt hyrt to be proactive, but some people say it doesnt matter, your body is going through a shock and will get adjusted eventually. I have an aburn curly wig picked out if i lose to much, but heres to hoping i dont need it. Good luck

Well ... the hair loss question ... should you be worried about it ... and your previous Hair loss experience was stress related?

Let me summarize a quote from George Burns when asked his secret to longevity. He said:

"I don't worry. If there is something happening in my life that I have no control over, I don't worry about it because I have no control over it. If I can control it, I don't worry about it because I have control over it."

So, you are most likely going to have hair loss. Is worrying about it going to make it better? Probably not. Is there anything you can do to stop it from occuring or lessen it? Maybe, but from what I have read, the best thing you can do is to do the right thing with your program. Get your Proteins, Vitamins and Water in. Just do the right thing and know that you may have to wear a wig.

I thought, at 5 months out, I was going to bypass the hair loss thing when, after putting gel in my hair, my palms were fuzzy with hair. Seriously fuzzy. It got to the point where I ended up shaving my head down close, as you can see in my avatar. If I was a woman, I would have had to wear a wig, for sure, but guys can get away with a close shave, so ...

So, worrying about it isn't going to help, but having a plan will. It will cause less stress (and hair loss) if you have a plan in place and accept that you may have to put it in play.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

My hair thinned, starting about 4 months, I had normal thickness of hair pre-op, and it went to thin, but not unmanageable. I didn't have to change my style and you couldn't see my scalp. It just looks scraggly and thin at the bottom. My hairdresser said at month 9 he was beginning to see regrowth. At 10 months, I have tons of short baby hairs growing back and my hair feels super thick at the base. I have to use hairspray to hold the little buggers down. But I am happy to see them!

One thing that you can try to stave off Hair loss is eating some fats in your diet. I know that this may not be good for your calorie count but your hair needs some fat to survive. The diets that we are given do not contain much fat at all. Try eating a little Peanut Butter each day or if you are able to eat other foods that are a high in fat depending on how far out from surgery you are. I know that when I was on my 8 month liquid diet about 10 years ago we had to comsume so much fat to help with the hair loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
