Not doing well on pre op diet

Recommended Posts

I am having terrible trouble staying on my preop diet. liquids are just not filling enough. I am doing Protein shakes and am allowed lean meat and veggies. I have been drinking bullion and alot of Water but I have cheated a few times. I have only lost a few lbs and my surgery is this friday.

I am so disappointed in myself!!!

Am I really going to be able to do the band if I can't stay on the pre op diet???

Teresa,

I know exactly what you're going though. I'm just finishing up day 2 of my clear liquid diet, with no protine drinks, or anything of substance really. I've turned the TV off, because the food commercials were making me salivate...

I started off drinking bullion... but I've found that making a broth from a Soup base tastes much, much better. I'm wishing my doctor would let me have a protine shake or something, but I'm only allowed bases/broths... and SF Jello... which is good for the first day...

I think this is really just torture to see how committed we are.:speechles I really believe that with the band, it will be easier. I'd settle for half a bite of real food right now, and be very pleased with it. I'm sort of viewing this as a rehab from real food, and then a slow build-up postop to eating again... the right way.

Congratulations to you both on your upcoming surgeries! YES! You can do this...

Teresa, don't feel bad about a little cheating. My surgeon recommend high protein/low carbs for two weeks prior to shrink my liver, making the surgery itself a bit easier. I felt guilty, since I only managed to start 9 days prior... but, things turned out well. I had no complications. My best advice is to get a couple of boxes of sugar free popsicles (30 cal) and when you feel hungry grab one of those... or two, three, etc .. however many it takes to curb the hunger you're feeling. Better yet, grab one and take it with you around the block. I know, I'm weird... but, just trying to give you ideas that will keep your mind off the other.

Tim, good strategy with the TV. How much longer to you have on the liquid diet? It's not really torture, that will come after!! Just kidding.

Keep up the good work, you CAN do this!

All the best,

Karla

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
