I know it is rare for a leak 1 out of 100 ? But this is what scares me most about the operation. Therefore this is the reason for my questions ????

What happens if I had a leak when I left the hospital in Europe and was at home in the UK ? Would I go to my local NHS hospital ?

Is there a danger after the first 6 weeks of a leak ?

How long approx does it take for stomach tissue to cover the staples and then is it safe from leaks ?

I had surgery in Mexico, and they performed a leak test before I was in recovery and then one before I was able to leave the hospital. They make sure that you don't. However, yes, you would just need to go to your local emergency room if something is wrong.

Very good info... I would also mention that foods you use to eat... You might not be able to eat after your surgery ( I love eggs and had issues with them for about 5 months, I can now eat them again). Same goes for scents... Ones you liked before may no longer appeal to you. It's a lil different for everyone but just in case... You have to try new foods slowly... and if they make your tummy feel bad... you should retry them after a couple of months...

Sorry for the late reply, but I'm from the UK and had my surgery done in Europe (the Czech Republic). The company I went through have you in hospital for a week so if there are any problems at all you have somebody to care for you, which really took the fear out of it for me because if you have problems with leaks etc they're most likely to happen then, but anywhere you go should perform a leak test to check you're ok. It is sometimes possible to present with a late leak (though quite rare) because the leak was so small it didn't show, but if you did have any problems then yes you would definitely go to your NHS doctor. Remember, whatever an individual doctor may think of your decisions, the NHS has a duty of care, they cannot refuse you treatment.

If you can, talk to your GP beforehand to tell them (note I said tell, not ask) that you're doing the surgery. Mine was very supportive and told me there would be no problems with her doing any blood tests/B12 injections I might need, but as she is not a bariatric specialist could I bring her information on what she needed to test for and why (which the suurgery group gave me). I actually have my letter from her for my 3 month blood test now to take to the hospital. She also re-prescribed my omezoprole (sp?) (the group gave me a two month supply when I left hospital) and set it to repeat prescription so I an reorder as necessary without seeing her and removed my stitches for me (which got infected so she gave me something to clear that up). Having a GP on side is really reassuring when doing surgery abroad as you want to make sure you have aftercare.

Thank you Perforce, Carl Dickenson and AlighterKann

For your kind replys ! I would like to think I would have my doctor on my side, but not sure about that but as you said perforce tell them don't ask !! I am going to make sure I do talk to my doctor before I do go have surgery. It is a good idea to have them on your side thank you. Can I ask you also where you went for your surgery Perforce ? I like the idea they kept you in for a week most just want to only have you there a very short time.

Many thanks ❤️

I went with New Leaf, to Turnov in the Czech Republic (www.newleafwls.co.uk). Yeah, that was a big part of my choice too, I didn't feel like I as just getting chucked out to fend for myself, I had heard so many stories of people not being able to get liquids in and having to go to the ER for IVs!

I had my surgery in Utah ( USA) I was in the hospital for 3 days... tried to fight to get out second day but they had to do the leak test which wasn't very pleasant. the stuff they had me drink was pretty nasty but better ot be safe.... I hear leaks are less common depending on the surgeon mine has had one or two ever from her surgeries.... So as long as you have a good doc... I wouldn't worry about leaks much... If you get one... you will know it as you will run a fever be sick etc... look it up know what to watch for and just take all around good care of yourself.. <3

Hi everyone! I have a question that I have heard a lot of different answers to, after my gastric sleeve surgery will my Mirena IUD birth control continue to be effective? Also, I am going in for surgery May 26th and I hope to be lighter than 340 lbs. When I go in, but on average how much weight can I expect to loose within the first year and does weight loss drastically slow down after year one? What have you sleevers done to maintain and continue to take weight off until your goal is reached?

Thank you for all advice, I am nervous but very excited!

Emily June

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
