my dr said no alcohol. i knew someone who drank after 3 mos, is that ok?

A sip or two isn't going to kill you, but it is empty calories. If you're going to drink alcohol, be aware of how much you're drinking and also how much it can slow down your weight loss. A simple drink like a gimlet can run as much as 200 calories; that's like 1/5th of what you're eating in a day. If you go for something sugary like a hurricaine it can be as much as 350-400. Pint of beer is around 200. Glass of wine is 100.

As you can see, these could all totally kill your diet plan -- and, in addition, you're going to get very drunk very fast. After a certain point the alcohol isn't a "danger" to you, as in it's not going to cause problems specifically with your sleeve. It will just slow down your weight loss and might also have negative effects.

Personally, I say drink responsibly. My NUT says "never drink again" but with a wink that says she knows that no one ever listens to that....

What is the deal with the caffeine? I'm not a coffee drinker but I drink organic green tea (plain) until the afternoon and then switch to organic peppermint tea for the rest of the day. Does the caffeine restrict blood vessels? Does it slow weight loss? Does it slow healing?
THANK YOU so much for such a helpful post!!!!!!!!

Green tea is a blood thinner so not allowed before surgery I’m told :)

I read that what you don't burn in Protein may turn into fat. I monitor my protein consumption versus protein burn rate in fitnesspal. If you are working on building muscle I feel you may need more protein to do so.

Protein maintains muscle, fat is stored energy

It's true that Protein can be used as energy or turned into fat if too much is consumed. I'd be more concerned about stressing my kidneys unnecessarily.

In general, 60-100g is sufficient during the weight loss phase (DS patients need more.. 100 -120g). As always, follow your doc's recommendation.

Excessive calories turn into fat. It doesnt matter if theyre Protein, carbohydrates, or fat.

Odds are its probably extremely difficult to eat TOO much protein, especially after WLS surgery.

The biggest concern for a WLS patient (that I can think of ) would be having more protein than they need and as a result not eating enough veggies/fiber and nutritiously dense foods in. I highly doubt 120g of protein is going to do anybody harm, once you get up to 200-300g of protein you might start having an issue (of course if you could eat that much protein from whole foods after a sleeve or bypass you might wanna ask for your money back) . But if 120g a day of protein keeps you from eating broccoli or whatever that could be the biggest issue. Nobody wants colon or digestive problems, which are extremely common as you get older.

Protein is the most important macronutrient for a bari patient absolutely. But once you got a reasonable amount, youd probably be better off with the nutritionally dense stuff. Of course you need to keep total calories in check as well which is a different story...

Also the kidney thing is more protein is bad for people with kidney disease, I dont believe theres any evidence that it causes it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
