2 Week Post-Op Dr Appt Concern

Recommended Posts

Went for my 2 week post-op today and was expecting everything to be great. No pain, lost 25lbs (including pre-op) and thought the dr would be so happy. Instead I left feeling a little worried about my health. My blood pressure was 89/50 and dr seemed concerned by how low and he restricted some of my work duties. Anyone else experience something like this? It was also low in the hospital. Dr did tell me that I lost a lot of blood during my procedure, but not enough for a transfusion. Could it be that my body hasn't made enough blood yet to replace what was missing? They didn't even do blood work. I'm not sure if that is normal for the 2 week check up? Maybe he didn't want to take any blood from me because I couldn't afford to lose it? He asked me to buy a blood pressure monitor and keep an eye on it. Anyone have some helpful insight?

Are you taking blood pressure medicine for any reason? I am not a medical person, but I'd think your body would have replaced the blood volume by two weeks post op unless you aren't getting enough fluid/calories to do that.

I think I'd call the doctor's office back and mention your concerns. Maybe the nurse can alleviate your fears. I'm shocked that he let you leave without a clearer understanding of what you can do to help yourself, if anything. At the very least, he should have told you to expect to be weak or light-headed for a certain amount of time and when to worry if the issue hasn't cleared by a certain date.

Good luck. I'm interested in hearing what the doctor's response to further questions may be.

I had my 2 week checkup today and my blood pressure was 90/47. That is normal for me though. I've always had really low blood pressure and not had any problems because of it. I didn't have blood work either today. I wouldn't worry about your blood pressure being low unless you start getting light headed.

I'm with Lissa, call your doctor and express your concerns. It may be okay but you will feel better if you call.

Mine did it also. but I am taking meds. It maybe because you are not drinking a large amount and you salt intake is down. Just watch to see if your blood pressure stays low. This maybe your new pressure. Maybe talk to your regular Dr.

Thanks for the responses. I have never taken blood pressure meds before and my blood pressure was always around 120/70. I just took it this morning and it is 91/61. I was very weak last week, but this week feel much better. I do get dizzy occasionally, but I told the Dr this and he said if it became worse or blood pressure dropped more to call him right away. I am glad to see others have had low pressure too and will be watching mine closely. I'll let you all know if things change and/or if I hear back from the Dr. I otherwise feel fine.

Sounds like dehydration. Was your heart rate elevated? I'm a nurse and classic sign of dehydration is low bp and high heart rate (100 or more)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
