To ALL Canuck Lapbanders, let's BAND together!

Recommended Posts

Hi all Canuck Lapbanders.

You know I was thinking ( which can be dangerous by the way) but after reading many of the posts here with all of your stories of success, difficulties and support that we all give to each other and recieve, I was thinking as an individual, one person is not a LOUD as many.

Many of us do not have the money for this surgery from what i read, and borrow or do without to take this on. The other surgery, gastric bypass has higher health costs, waiting times and HUGE risk to the patient including MORTALITY! The costs of obesity wreaks havoc not just on our emotional health but health costs and diabetes , heart disease, coronary heart disease, etc costs our health plans millions a year . The insurabce plans will pay for breast reduction as an example and I would think that changing an obese person to someone of good weight and health would be just as important and overall save money to the system. I advocate that we talk here first and then organize it so that as a group collectively we protest to our government.

We can see first how we feel about what i am saying and then go from there and organize how we do this. I am a nurse, i also have worked in the media and if we get the media on our side , we would have some clout. We can decide to write letters, or as a group sign something collective and on the same day across the country, we get together near which ever big city we live in and protest at that house of legislature. If Toronto, was on the news that day on television, and say Montreal, ottawa, etc across the board, then we might be heard.

Now do you think I am just suffering from cottage cheese/ yogurt fatigue or do you think this might be something that we collectively can do?

You absolutley are right Kim, and something should be done!!

You cannot come on here and not tell us how the BBQ went!! KIM you have surgery in just a couple days....ARE YOU NOT PUMPED!!! I am so excited for you:clap2: :clap2: .

I'm not trying to change the subject......It is appalling, and they should look at it as an investment into peoples lives that will save them billions of dollars in the future, if they dont have to pay for heart surgeries, diabetes, strokes, etc....YOU ARE RIGHT!!

I agree....however from my understanding on the CanadianLapbanders site...this has already been done to some extent and it has, in fact, been challenged with various degrees of success.

Yeah Kim....what Cloe said: how was the BBQ?

First, about this thread. If someone has tried to challenge this before..fine, but it still hasn't happened and it should by all rights and purposes.Do we just roll over and acept this, or keep up the pressure and common sense in hopes that they will finally get it, that they will save themselves money down the road with health care costs? I am serious, I do not want to let this die and we all go quietly and accept what big brother says. I seriously think WE should take a stand, stand up for ourselves and future brothers, sisters down the road. So please lets keep talking about this.

as for the bbq..ya I did it and over did it and paid for it. I started to enjoy the scents, the flavours etc, inthe beginning, but realized i could't stop and i was of the feast before the famine mentality and wanted to stuff it all in before I go through the month or so of blech!

so there ya go,,,,,, now I was starting to enjoy my cottage cheese, NOWI hate it again!

you know I am sooo surprised that there are not many posts to this thread.... honestly people bitch and complain just like they do about their government and then they don't vote. Well people who do not vote have no right to bitch, and honestly if people are so apathetic that they don't want to band together, then I don't want to read another complaint about cost of the surgery.( not directed to cloe and yoda)

and I did not see any cbc show tonight. when i looked.

Kim,

I have overcome many challenges and hardships in my life (Including a bout with breast cancer). I am sure that in itself proves that I am not a WIMP.

I joined this forum to get support from other lapbanders on my weight loss journey, not to become a crusader or to be insulted.

While the cost of the surgery was equally as difficult for me personally as I am sure it was for many others, I have never complained about it. However if people want to express themselves concerning the cost, they have the right to do so, without been told that "We don't want to hear it".

Protesting is a big commitment and requires people to come out of their comfort zones, if they don't choose to meet your challenge it is their right not to do so. Just as it is mine.

Maria

Kim, I don't think very many complain here on our little Canadian section. I feel quite comfortable giving and receiving support. Please remember everyone is at different stages in there lives, and not everyone is, has or will be an activist, even though they agree with the cause. We as friends in this community only know a very small fraction of who each other really are. Many, many things factor in to weather a person will stand up and be heard. But I don't agree that wimps is the word to describe them. Not everyone has the ability, or wants the ability to address confrontation. Thats why we hire lawyers to represent us in court, or vote in councillors to represent us in political issues. That said, it dosent mean these people wont help in supportting the cause, but they themselves are not confortable initiating it. But I do agree with the voting, I think we should all take advantage of our right to vote in our wonderful country.

Best of Luck with your surgery tommorow:) .

thanks cloe

Irish Mist well said and i understand. I was not trying to take away from a support group that folks need, but I hate it when people are taken advantage of and this feels like it, so that was my point. Obese peopel have been discriminated against in many ways ( weighs/) and I just see so many stay quiet and not stand up for themselves. That was all. sorry about your bout with breast CA. and I`apologize, it was not my intention to upset you or anyone else really .

Good luck today, Kim. Actually with me being on the west coast and a few hours behind, you're probably in the process at this moment. So here's wishing you a speedy recovery.

This isn't actually a reply but I don't know how to start a new subject.

Anyway, I had my surgery just a year ago and I'm down maybe 10 lbs. I can't eat good food = lean meat, salads, etc. but I can eat crackers, chips, etc. This is very frustrating. I don't know if I need a fill or a defill.

Anybody have any ideas?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
