Any Issues Throwing Up?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting the sleeve in a few weeks, but am worried about puking. My wife had the lap band and she would puke all the time. It seems it's the same concept, since your upper stomach is now the small area food has to travel through, but better in the long run. I just don't want to be puking all the time. Any advice from people on this and anything else you want to give me for info/advice? I know I need this, but am scared a bit as well. I'm 6'7", so I hide my weight because of my tall frame, but i am hoping to lose 100 lbs of my 320lbs.

I've heard that it's quite typical for a band patient to throw up. With the sleeve -typically- if you throw up, you've done something wrong- eat the wrong food, too fast, too big of bite.... I've not thrown up once except in the hospital caused by some post nasal drip. (eew). I was NPO, so the goo made me barf. Other than that- no problems with the yarg.

I'm over 3 months out.. I didn't throw up until recently.. My own fault... slacked on my prevacid, had 2 sweet drinks and woke up w/ a reflux attack...

I think you'll be fine.. Just stay hydrated and take your meds...

I'm 10 weeks out and I've had some barfing. The nurse thinks it's almost entirely related to not chewing well enough, combined with eating too fast, although too much food will come up too. If I avoid those situations I don't have problems. A key thing for me is not to let myself get overly hungry so I don't feel starving when I go to eat. Low cal cheese sticks help.

Thanks for all the quick replies! When my wife threw up, it was major pain. For those of you that have thrown up, how bad is it? What about coughing? Any pain there?

I have only vomited once since being sleeved. I've also been lap banded previous to my sleeve and the differences between the two, though it may not seem so, are great. I was sliming and vomiting all the time, and even in my sleep with my band. Again, I've only vomited once with my sleeve, and that was the day after due to contents not settling in my stomach.

The major reason a sleever would vomit is because they are not chewing properly or trying to over eat. As long as you don't do those two things you should be fine. Of course, we can also get "bugs" so that's still a possibility.

When I vomited I was still fresh from surgery and heavily medicated so I didn't feel any pain. I'm not sure how it would feel now, and I'm surely not wanting to find out! ;)

The first cough, sneeze, hiccup after surgery, when you aren't medicated... HURT!!!.. But after that, I didn't have much pain... I can't stand throwing up.. doesn't hurt, just very annoying!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
