What are good ways to handle the questions like, oh you're not eating? Or oh, that's all you're eating? I'm being sleeved in 2 days and I just got an e-mail at work about my supervisor's promotion party. It's at a Mexican spot exactly 2 weeks post-op. I already looked at the menu and know I can get the chicken tortilla Soup and just eat the broth. But I already know I will be questioned. The last time we had bday cake at work, I didn't want any and it seems like everyone was down my throat about it. I said I was watching my sugar, oh this is not that sweet. ugh! I ended up taking a plate back to my office and trashing it. I'm really considering calling in sick that day. I really don't want to deal with the questions. Help!

"oh..my stomach's just not feeling quite right today. I'm ok! How are your kids doing? Did you ever buy that truck you were talking about??"

Smoke and mirrors...divert the attention. People love to talk about themselves, so just keep asking questions...

I agree with the above also!! If it's in the evening, you can always say I have another dinner to go to later or something!

Tell them that you stomach has been upset all day and that you are just going to try the Soup and hope that it settles. Or you can tell them that you are just not that hungry.

Question: "Oh you're not eating?" Answer: "Nope, not much."

Question: "Oh, that's all you're eating?" Answer: "Yep."

Why would you ever need to explain? Why would you need to make excuses to people -- especially those who are basically at the status of "co-worker."

I feel your pain. I skipped a group lunch at an old favorite - Indian buffet not too long ago. All I said was I wasn't much good at a buffet any more but it was a bummer.

My story at work is I had GI surgery to correct some gerd damage. That fib has allowed me to explain my post-op eating regime to anyone who asked.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Oh, here's the kicker. We have to submit our order on this spreadsheet next week. So everyone can see everyone's order. Yeah, I'm really thinking about calling in that day. It's not one of those things we can be here in the office and miss.

I hate to get all technical and such but harrassment is not tolerated in any work place(on or off the clock), tell them you are on a path to self improvement and either support you or leave you be. My boss and HR dept were very helpful with this step of my journey, Yes a few people quit talking to me but I gained much more respect from everyone else

I like the one word answer idea. Not any of their business! I have no problem telling everyone who will listen what I had done so I wouldnt care if they questioned me personally. You are doing this to imporve your health and if the dont understand...

I have told co-workers that I am taking my wife out for a special evening later and I don't want to fill up on this food ... especially mexican!!

If they continue to question, ask them in a non-confrontational way, "I'm just curious. Why are you so concerned about what I am ordering?"

That will be the end of it.

You might just turn around and say: The real question is why are you eating so much?

I know, easier said than done but turning the tables usually works and you can probably come up with a more PC way to do it. :-)
