Greek Yogurt

Recommended Posts

I am hearing tons about greek yogurt. Sounds like many people mix it and I just can't keep it all straight. I thought a new topic specific for greek yogurt would help. What is your favorite brand of greek yogurt? What is your favorite way to eat greek yogurt? Thanks

Fage 0 is my fav. It's available at my costco. I also liked Kirkland Fatfree Plain Greek Yougurt, but my costco no longer carries it.

My two fav ways to eat greek yogurt:

Smoothie: Blend the amount of yogurt you can eat (at 2 months I could do 1/2 cup, now I can do 1 cup), some Splenda, a splash of OJ, 1/4 cup Water, and a couple of frozen berries. Yum!

Yogurt parfait: Stir some Water into the amount of yogurt you can eat (at 2 months I could do 1/2 cup, now I can do 1 cup) to make it a thinner conistency. Stir in Splenda to taste. Top with Splenda-sweetened berries. I buy the big bag of mixed berries from Costco and defrost 1/2 cup then stir in a couple tablespoons of Splenda.

I am pre-surgery at this point, but thanks Lynda for the ideas. I have copied them down for later use. Thanks Cmullinvegas for starting the topic!

I never had a taste for it before (except the Trader Joe's full fat and sugar version- SOO good, but so bad! ;) ) Now that I've been off of sugar for 6 weeks, it ALL tastes good to me! I love the Chobani blood orange flavor, The Dannon Oikos is REALLY good, and The Fage (fa-yeh) is good as well. I'm sampling all the different brands right now. The Protein in them is great. They all generally have 12-14 or more grams per carton, and the calories are usually around 120-140. If that's your whole Breakfast, then that's not a bad deal! If you struggle getting in protein, this is a great way to do it. I don't mix it with anything at this point. I just eat it like it is.

Oh ya, and some people get the plain and makes dips out of it- like savory flavors- ranch, onion, and the like. And some use it in place of mayo or sour cream. There is a lot you can do with the plain stuff.

Page is great but I also really like Chobani. They carry Chobani at Target where I am at one of the grocery stores. I love yogurt and will eat it plain or with other things.

One treat is yogurt with fruit and just a sprinkle of granola on top for crunch. I do the same with cottage cheese - add fruit and granola. The crunch is nice.

Yogurt is also an excellent marinade for chicken. Add a little saffron to the yogurt when you marinage. When ready to cook: dredge in breadcrumb or whatever you like and bake. I like to use my cast-Iron skillet.

For high protein/low carb I use chobani plain yogurt. I add in a scoop of unflavored Protein powder, some Torani sugar free vanilla Syrup (i highly recommend), some walnuts and some cinnamon/nutmeg. Love this! And it is very high in Protein.< /p>

After surgery I could barely eat any, but now at 6 months out I can finish the container in an hour. Good luck!

Adding the sugar free coffee syrups, sugar free pudding powder, and crystal light packets were all easy, no to low carb and quick.

I loved the white chocolate SF pudding powder mixed with Chobani or Fage plain fat free. I'd freeze it in ice cube trays and have little servings of "frozen yogurt".

I never ate the premixed ones with fruit because of the carb and sugar counts.

I use it for a sour cream substitute in all my recipes, and make chicken, tuna and egg salads with it and the dry ranch or italian dressing packets. I ate tons of the chicken, tuna and egg salads through my losing stage. Even today, over 2.5 years out, I use greek yogurt in all of my recipes for myself, my family and any potlucks or socials that I attend. No one ever knows that I use Greek yogurt as a substitute for sour cream. When asked for recipes, people are shocked because most hate it. But, it's a great substitute and it cooks/bakes really well.

I make my own, it's cheaper and tastes the same. Take one carton of fat free plain yogurt (i.e. Dannon or store brand), tiny pinch of salt or to taste, and strain it through a coffee filter or cheesecloth overnight (place yogurt in coffee filter or cheesecloth, set it inside a colander. Put a larger bowl underneath the colander to catch the liquid, cover in plastic wrap and leave in the fridge overnight. Just make sure you don't use a brand that has Gelatin in the ingredient list, as the yogurt won't thicken. You'll end up with 1/2-2/3 of the original volume.

I use it much the same way as the above posters - in place of sour cream in any dish, mixed with fruit and a packet of Splenda, sometimes I'll even stir in a scoop of vanilla Protein powder along with some fruit (it's a little grainy but has great flavor). I also like to mix with FF or LF cottage cheese and a spoonful of sugar free jam.

It's definitely an acquired taste, but if you can get used to it...GREAT source of Protein for such a small cup! Try different brands. They all have a slightly different character. You may find one that makes you go yay!

I have tried a Chobani and Fage (both baby/kid and adult) several times, several different flavors and they are all nasty. I can't stand the sour after taste. However, yesterday I tried Yopait and it was by far the best. It was very mild. Tasted closer to the regular Yopait yogurt that a Greek style yogurt, but with all the benifits of the Protein. I tried the blueberry one. It's is very thick so I think I might add a little milk to thin it out. They make them is two different sizes. I got the smaller one (4 oz cup), which was the perfect size for early sleevers. Contains 8g of protein. The 6 oz container has 12 grams of protein.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
