Pregnancy after Lapband?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm new here to this site and will be heading to the introductory seminar at the end of August, but was wondering if anyone here had the lapband and had a subsequent pregnancy. Is there a period of time where you shouldn't try getting pregnant? I'm just 37 and hoping to get the lapband soon with Dr. Abkin in NJ...at least that's my hope. I certainly fit the criteria. But at some point in the next few years I would like to have a baby and want to know if anyone's had the experience with an existing lapband...that doesn't sound quite right, LOL, but I'm hoping that you all know what I mean!

Thank you,

Virginia

There are a few ladies here who have had "band babies" or have become pregnant after being banded.

If you hit the "search" button, and type "pregnancy" in you will get more than a few threads on the subject come up.

I had the band put on in January 2005. I became pregnant in August and my son was born in April 2006. I kept the band tightened until the 4th month. I had to deflate it because I continued to lose weight. After it was deflated, I only ate a little more than when the band was tightened. I don't know if this is because the placenta was pushing up on my stomach or what. Six weeks after his birth I went to have my first adjustment and it was found that my band had slipped. I had to have the surgery completely re-done. They took the old band out and put a new band in. The doctor says it probably slipped because I threw-up too much during the pregnancy. I was super sick the entire time. I began taking anti-nasuea medicine in the 3rd month, but, I guess it was too little too late from the band aspect. My doctor says that there is no guarantees that this one won't slip again if I decide to have another. I will need to start the anti-nasuea medicine as soon as a start to feel morning sickness if I decide to have another one.

Hi ! I have a little lap band baby! I was banded February 2005 and became pregnant in June 2005. Brenna was born in February 2006 and weighed almost 7 pounds.

For once I gained only the recommended amount of weight instead of my usual 80 pounds that I gained with my first 2 pregnancies. I really felt good when I was pregnant this time. I went much of the pregnancy without being unfilled but then had a slight unfill when I became so tight I couldn't eat anything. My daughter is very healthy and after she was born I went in for a fill and am continuing my weight loss journey. I have about 30 more pounds to go to reach my goal.

Good luck with your decision.

Jeanette

My fill Dr. always warns us, that newly banded women seem to get pregnant very easily. He said losing as little as 5-10% of your body weight, kicks your cycle into overdrive. He went on to explain that in reality it normalizes, but many of us due to the weight had irregular cycles, and that the weight loss improves it.

Also mamabear, don't worry yourself sick over it, your next pregnancy, you may not have a single sick day. Each pregnancy will be different, and you may sail through without issue, I hope so for you!!! My first and last pregnancy I was sick. The entire time the last pregnancy, only the first trimester the first time. But with my daughter in the middle of the others, I only even felt nauseated once, and we were stuck in traffic right by Long John Silvers, and the fish smell made my tummy roll!!! But I never got sick!! I have heard others say the same, that they know if it is a boy or girl by the way they do or do not get morning sickness. I had all day sickness, not morning sickness the last time!!! Good Luck to all of you....my baby days are over...working on and enjoying the grandbabies now!

Hi,

My band baby is 6wks old!!

I was banded in Sept 2003 and my Daughter Brooke was born 4th July. I had no problems during pregnancy.I do think I should have had my band adjusted near the end but Brooke was born a healthy 7lb 11oz.

The only problem I have had was losing most of the restriction after she was born but I was re-filled yesterday and all is back on track.

Congratulations Jakkie on your new baby girl. I cannot believe Brenna is nearly 6 months old. I'm sure you've been told to enjoy her while she is so little because in the blink of an eye they grow so quickly!

VA-

I think most doctors will say wait at least a year after WLS. But there are several people who get pregnant sooner. A year gives you time to adjust to the band and your weight loss and the more weight you lose the better before pregnancy. I am pregnant and have the band. I have a slipped band so I don't have any salin in my band at this time. I have gained 20 pds already at 6 months but I eat junk all the time. There are a lot of people who will keep the weight off or do very well and besides the great thing is the band is still there to help you after your baby is born. Good luck to you!

* smiles* its nice to hear such positive stories. I'm 12 weeks pregnant. My Dr. also told me to wait a year. He also said its not dangerous to have a child but would of liked to see me lose some weight first. I'm really excited and can't wait to get back on my weight loss journey. Congrats to all the lap band mommies...

mamabear your story sounds like if I would of been typing it:

I got my band January 2005 (243.5 lbs), became pregnant in August and my son was born in April 2006. I got an unfill at 8 weeks of my pregency and was fine the entire pregancy. I didnt gain any weight until my 8th month and by the time I delivered I had gained a total of 23 pounds. For some reason I had no appetite during my entire pregnancy and I also did not get morning sickness (maybe I throw up about 4-5 times) Six weeks after his birth I went to have a fill and I started my weight loss again, it has been very slow (2 weeks after delivery I went down to 206) I am now at 192 and it has been very hard to restart but I am doing it slowly.

Thankfully my band was never in any harm but I was very scared the entire time thinking that I could loss it.

Hi girls,

I too want to have baby # 3 someday soon. I am 9 weeks post op and only now am I slowly seeing results. My Dr in Oz said I need to wait a minimum of 3 months before trying for a child. I think it's a little early but he seemed to think it was long enough to wait. I have approximately 60lbs/30kgs to lose and would like to lose at least half before trying. I definately don't want to be overweight and pregnant again. Been there, done that!! TOO HARD..

Hi - I am currently 32 weeks pregnant. I was banded in 2003. I had to have my band unfilled with 1/2 the Fluid around 4 months because I was getting really painful heartburn. I have noticed lately though the further along I get the more restricted I feel. Currently I have gained 56 pounds of the weight that I had lost (as oppossed to 80 to 90 I usually gain) but my pregnancy has been good. With all of my other pregnancies I had high blood pressure, toxemia and a host of other pregnancy related illnesses.......but because I had lost all the weight with the band I think it stopped me from getting them this time. I'm not worried about loosing the weight though this time. I've done it once and I will do it again with the help of the band!

I had a natural birth. This was also my last I got my tubes tied so that I can continue with my goal of 30 pounds by January, but it's hard since I can't seem to get back in track. I need to find me a band buddy to get back in the groove of things.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
