Doctor Recommends Sleeve

Recommended Posts

So iam 5'10 i wiegh 400, i have lost 58 pounds getting ready for surgery. I had my mind set on gastric Bypass. Today i went for app. with surgeon, he recommended that for my size and since i am doing good already loosing wieght . He suggested that I have Gastric sleeve instead. My question is what does evrybody think should i have stuck with gastric Bypass? i just feel that if im gonna do this that i should go all out, I agreed with doctor about sleeve and will be having surgery next month. I just dont want to have second thoughts about switching surgery. I need some reassurance that i will loose as much wieght with sleeve. This my first post on sleeve site because all my other post were on bypass site. Help me with second guessing myself.

You can lose as much weight with the sleeve as with bypass. Because you are a big guy, it will take time for the weight to come off and that time will help you learn new eating habits. Bypass malabsorption only lasts for 18-24 months and bypass patients who have relied on malabsorption to lose their weight are up the proverbial creek, plus they have malnutrition issues forever. There's a guy on Obesity Help who has lost 350 lbs with the sleeve. I think your surgeon gave you very good advice in recommending VSG. However, I am a strong advocate in people getting the surgery they think is right for them and if you feel that you would do better with a bypass, talk to your surgeon again.

My Mother n Law had the bypass 7 years ago or so...she is slowly gaining weight back. Up to a 1X as of Christmas...and I believe its exactly as the other post said. When I told her I was getting sleeved she said she wished she had that option back when she was going thru the process..

I do know that you do have the option to have Bypass after you have had the Sleeve if you are not satisfied. You haven't shut the door on that option for good. :D

I've heard over and over about bypass pouches stretching back out and people regaining weight. The thing that made me love this option (sleeve) is that the full stretching can't happen. The stretchy fundus of the stomach is removed leaving the firm part that won't stretch like that. Over time, your capacity will go to about 6 oz of food, roughly, but that's still not much compared to a whole stomach!

I was told that you can count on losing 80% of your weight "overage" with the sleeve, BUT--many people have exceeded that! I still have the dream of getting back down to 140. That would be a loss of 200 lbs. for me. It's not entirely impossible, but I'd be over the moon happy at 160. The sleeve is a tool. And from what I've seen, a good one. I could not stand the thought of having everything cut here and reconnected there....just freaked me out. This is simple and clean. That said...do what you and your doc think is best for your bod! I willlllll shut up now!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
