Is Running Fever Normal?

Recommended Posts

I've done a search and can't seem to find the answer, so I apologize if this has been asked lately.

I've been running a low grade temperature off and on for the last 4 days since my sleeve. Ranging from 99.1-101.2. Not steady, just off and on. ( Also, no other problems at all) Called my nurse Friday and she told me not to worry, that it's not unusual to run a low fever after surgery but if it went over 102 this weekend to call the on-call nurse and head to the hospital. It hasn't been over 101.2 since yesterday, but reading about leaks has me NERVOUS! Can anyone put my mind at ease and tell me they did the same thing post-op? Thanks!

For some reason, I thought your title meant you had "running fever," meaning you wanted to start running a lot, lol.

I ran a fever right after surgery but they didn't make a big deal about it, so I assume everything was fine. I didn't have a leak and I had two leak tests. Did they make you do a leak test after surgery? Probably because it's right after surgery and your body is working overtime, you're going to have a higher temperature than normal.

I agree, watch your temp. I will say, I had a leak and only a very low grade fever but also had severe shoulder pain. I think you would have other symptoms if you had a leak.

Haha... No indeed I don't have "fever" to run! Lol. I should have worded that differently :) no leak test that I remember, although I was told the surgeon checks for leaks before he stitches you up... But I don't have any other pain except for the soreness in my abdomen. Thanks for your reply!

Ok, thanks... If my shoulder starts hurting then I'll get worried then!

They check for leaks internally before they stich you up and also every time they empty your drain tube. I asked specifically because I was so worried about leakage :)

I had surgery 12 days ago and I ran fever. I had tests done and had no leak. The doctors said it is normal after surgery for some people and shallow breathing can contribute to it. Tylenol in addition to the pain meds helped with that.

Thanks! I did have shallow breathing in the hospital... So much so, that they didn't give me a morphine pump and I was on oxygen the whole time!

I have also had a slightly elevated temp, off and on. I have no shoulder pain, though. And no pain in my abdomen other than my biggest incision (and the times that I'm stupid and 'eat' too much). I'm just chalking it up to the major surgery.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
