Gaining Weight After Vsg?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I've been reading a lot of posts that talk about people gaining weight after a VSG surgery which sounds a little surprising to me. It would seem to me that since you are so restricted and can only eat a few ounces of food at a stting that you'd have to eat really horribly to gain weight. Are those people who are gaining weight eating candy, milkshakes and other fatteing foods all the time? Just don't see how you can gain weight on such a small amount of food.

I have been on here for a few months now and I haven't seen that many people saying they gained a lot of weight. In fact there was a thread few weeks ago where someone from Louisiana had the sleeve 5 years ago and has gained only 15 pounds until today. That's pretty amazing considering I know a lot of banded people who gained a lot more weight then that in a shorter period of time. To answer your question on how it's possible to gain weight yes if you are going to eat a lot of slider foods that has lots of calories you will gain weight and at the same time you will be stretching your stomach making it easier to eat more then you would have originally.

It's possible to "eat around" any WLS. With the sleeve, what tends to happen is that people either drink excess calories, eat food that chews to mush (so no feeling of restriction and a way to pack in a lot of junk calories) or "graze" all day long.

Developing good habits right after surgery--journaling your food and tracking calories, weighing yourself every day and cutting back if there's a gain, eating dense Protein first--will help you achieve success and maintain weight loss.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
