Not Thrilled About 2 Week Pre-Op Liquid Diet...

Recommended Posts

I begin my liquid diet on Monday for surgery on the 10th. I am dreading this more than having my stomach removed. My reaction to food deprivation is scary. I turn into a child begging for food, crying, sometimes yelling...and I'm a successful 37 year old woman!

I'm going to do it though. What I want to know is of the 1000 calories I am allowed to have, should I be able to choose any liquid to eat as long as I stay in my calorie range? (Except alcohol of course!) Meaning do I have to pay strict attention to fat and carbs?

What would happen if I cheated one night? (Going to a party for the Hunger Games (ha ha) and there will be mounds of food.)

At 220 lbs and a BMI of 42, does anyone know the amount of weight I would be expected to lose?

Does anyone have any tips or tricks that they did during their 2 week pre-op?

Thanks, guys, I'm so glad you're here.

I am in the same boat.. liquid diet starts Tuesday - surgery on April 10! We can do this. I would imagine cheating one time would be a slippery slope (for me anyway) and I would convince myself I could do it again. Fix yourself a nice big protien drink and take it to the party with you.

Good luck!

We all can do it!!! I have to start my 3 week liquid diet on Tuesday and my surgery is on April 18th. I am 350 so it will be the start of a new (lighter me). Just think you will be able to buy smaller clothes you will look and feel much better. So drinking protien shakes for 2 weeks is worth it. I have heard the key is to have a variety of types of protien shakes so you dont get bored with the same flavor. I am going to the Vitamin shoppe tomorrow to get some more flavors or even check online with Amazon.

I have been substituting a lunch or Breakfast with a shake every now and then preparing for this. Good Luck and stay strong.

Keep the faith guys!! I realized once you get to the other side, part of the reason for the pre-op diet is to get you prepared for the post-op diet!!! The mental part of the diet is just as important as the physical weight loss, plus they call the pre-op weight loss forever weight loss so it sounds cool :-p !

Good luck to all of you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
