Did You Have To Get Buck Naked For The Operation? Or Could You Wear Under Ware?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if it is standard procedure to be naked for surgery or can you wear your under things? I have no problem with it if it is standard procedure, if not I'd resist it, I go to Mexico tomorrow to be sleeved. So, thanks in advance...

Yep! I wasnt allowed to have anything under my gown...but you dont need support when you are in surgery and lying down during recovery...once I got up and my cath out I could put on my undies and I did that only a few hours later.

OK, I thought I read that Dr. Alverez let his patients wear undies.... and I just found out that my surgeon is opposed so I wanted to see what the most common procedure was.

Thanks for answering...

You are wearing a hospital gown with nothing underneath. One of the incisions is very close to where your bra fits in between your breasts and a bra would get in the way of that incision. Your tummy is cleaned with an antiseptic before surgery and undies might get in the way. You can put them back on right after surgery if you want.

@twoboysandgirl where did you have your surgery? I saw that you mentioned you had a cath. A urinary cath?

Just about every surgery in a hospital under a general anesthesia will require you removing everything and going in with just a gown. It is really nothing to worry about. First, they aren't looking. Second, they've seen it all! No worries.

Thanks, I'm not nervous about it, I've had two c-sections, but I just wanted to know the general consensus and if it is a regular thing then so be it... I just thought Dr. Alverez let his patients wear theirs. What if it happens to be that time of month? Then do you have to do the obvious? (sorry to ask such a question, just that I go on Fri. and my period just arrived yesterday!)

Actually I believe they make you take off your underwear because it has something to do with the machinery they use and that can cause the elastic in your underwear to burn you

I had to take everything off including any jewlery, like wedding ring. I've also been told no nail / toe polish, and of course, no make up. I had to shower right before (which I would have no matter anyway) with an antibacterial soap! We all have to do this because we are "taking the easy way out" you know! ;-) (hope sarcasm comes through! )

I work in Surgery. For any surgery involving the belly we have the patient remove their underwear because we prep the skin with a surgical scrub and they would contaminate the area/get in our way. For other surgeries you can keep cotton panties on, others are a fire risk. Hope this helps. :)

If it makes you feel any better, as far as you know you're wearing a hospital gown. What you don't know won't hurt you. :)

They made me take everything off. I was spotting a lot around the time when I had my surgery so the nurse gave me some disposable underwear that were made out of stretchy gauze-like material. Not very comfortable but gotta do what you gotta do!

Hi Sarah,

My TOM started the day before surgery and they gave me some gauzy panties and a pad to wear during surgery--as long as you're wearing what they give you and not you're own stuff, it's all good...good luck! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
