hope2Bfitand40 37 Posted March 20, 2012 I had a hiatal hernia repair, and I don't think my recovery was any worse. I did take my pain medicine regularly about the first week. On day 6, it was like a switch and I started feeling better and being able to take drinks, rather than sips. I don't have any more specific info on the hernia, as I see my doctor tomorrow. I am 2 weeks post op (today) and I feel great. Hope this helps!
spadesmcloven 8 Posted March 20, 2012 I have been having lots of problems standing and just got my band removed and sleeve at the same time. I was told that my doc fixed a hiatal hernia that I had. I have no pain except for the ng tube at the hospital and gas in my shoulder now. It should work out great for you. Good luck!!!! I guess it is common to have a hiatal hernia seem to read it a lot on this forum.
Dooter 1,457 Posted March 20, 2012 Yep. I had one repaired. I had to take the pain meds for two full weeks because of it. It wasn't horrific or anything, but I really did need to take it that long. Right at two weeks it just stopped hurting. The pain the hernia was causing me was much worse though, so I was really glad to get it fixed.

hadouni 301 Posted March 20, 2012 I had a haital hernia repaired with my sleeve and I wouldn't have known if he hadn't told me. My recovery was great. I slept in a recliner chair the first two nights home because it was most comfortable. I had surgery Monday morning, home Tuesday afternoon and I think my last pain pill was on Thursday. I didn't need to use many of them so I consider myself really lucky. I think the hernia repair is just a couple stitches, not a big deal compared to what they'll do to your stomach! slimthickens 28 Posted March 20, 2012 I had my EGD last month and they told me I also have a hiatal hernia that will need to be repaired. It must be common for overweight people to have them since so many of us will need them repaired during our VSG's.
emily_0192010 168 Posted March 20, 2012 First, it is very, very common for them to find hiatal hernias. I had one but I didn't know about it until my follow-up visit 7 days later lol! My surgeon was showing me pictures of the procedure and he was like "and that was your hernia"... kinda felt bad because the first thing I blurted out was "did you fix it?" he looked kinda hurt and was like "of course I fixed it, I wasn't going to leave it there!" I was on pain meds for only a couple days after I got home (so maybe 4-5 days after the day of the surgery including in the hospital). I have heard many people say they didn't need any at all, so maybe because I had the hernia I had more pain? But either way, it wasn't anything horrible. Oh, and the other thing is that my surgery was a bit longer because of it... but I certainly didn't know the difference! Good luck and don't let it worry you!
